Volla Phone: All traffic (including CLI commands) through TOR network
-
I want to rout all traffic incl. command line stuff through TOR. Basically everything should be rooted through TOR. On my laptop I use this tutorial but I am already stuck in getting TOR running in my Libertine container. It's installed but that's it.
Checked if it's installed:
libertine-container-manager exec -i xenial -c "tor --version"
Output:Tor version 0.2.9.14.
Then I tried to start Tor:
libertine-container-manager exec -i xenial -c "service tor start"
Output:/usr/bin/env.fakechroot: 135: /usr/bin/env.fakechroot: /etc/init.d/tor: not found
If someone has an idea how I can make my Volla phone "Tor only", let me know.

That wont work with libertine: As the name suggests its a container, so even if you manage to install and start it, it will be restricted to that container. All other network will be untouched.
Tor integration on a low system level is a pending request since years but so far nobody wanted to start working on this. You would need to find a skilled Linux developer to help with this, there is a lot of tooling needed, including UI design work, DBus services etc. So its not an easy task, more like man-months of work probably.

@flohack I found this outdated blog post and contacted the author. Let's see, what he says. I guess I would have to install Ubuntu 20.04 with all permissions in developer mode onto my Volla Phone to make it TOR-only. The upcoming OTA-16 should be based also on Ubuntu 20.04 from what I read. Yesterday I updated to OTA-15 which is still based on Ubuntu 16.04. I wouldn't mind if everything has be done from terminal as long as it works. No GUI needed.

@toruser Well no GUI is no option for us, we don't want to force unexperienced users into console commands. Everybody should be able to use features we provide.
Its a high barrier, yes, but from my past encounters, if you dont ask for a GUI from beginning, the design will be made quickly and simple, and hard to refactor later into a full-blown feature. So, anybody who wants to help with that, please talk with us about proper architecture.

@flohack Sure, a simple toggle switch to route all traffic of my phone through TOR would be a killer feature. Including a button to get a new IP from the TOR network. We should probably find 2-3 devs and create a crowdfunding campaign. I would be willing to pay for it.

At this point, the real concern is not Tor but having a simple internet connection on the UT volla, this lack of internet is my case, even in OTA-14, others only on dev and rc channels. Already getting the basics right, i.e. normalizing cellular data problems.
The positive point is that I flashed (without solving my problem) several times the volla with the last installer and it works great!
