Kaios

I have a 'feature phone' with Kaios Linux as the OS. It's the rebirth of Firefox OS and is meant for low spec devices. As the vast majority of apps are in HTML5, it seems to a good opportunity to cooperate and share.

@yuri It would require someone to port the Gecko rendering engine (from Firefox) over to UT.
There is a Linux "emulator" for KaiOS that could probably be used as a backend for KaiOS webapps, but it will not be super easy.
I agree though that there are some interesting apps for KaiOS that would be nice to have on UT. For example there is an official WhatsApp version that could be used that way.

@povoq I don't think Gecko (now Servo) would necessarily be needed, assuming that any APIs used by these HTML5 apps exists in QtWebengine, or could be implemented in or around it.

Maybe, but given that it seems like these KaiOS apps use some quite uncommon (and even removed in later versions of Firefox) functionality of Gecko, I doubt it would work very well with qtwebengine.
I think there are some efforts to bring KaiOS to a newer version of Gecko though, and then there might be more luck with getting them to run on a different browser engine.

A phone running Kai OS might have a better chance running the deGoogled version of it called GerdaOS. Currently that OS is only official for the Nokia 8110 4G.

@manchee1017 This thread is about the possibility of getting KaiOS apps running on UT, and not about replacing the OS on devices which shipped with KaiOS.

@dobey oops, there I go not reading again...
