With this versions I've
Error: core:download: Error: core:download Error: Error: Download Error: https://images.droidian.org/rootfs-api28gsi-all/droidian-stable-latest/arm64/generic/rootfs.zip Error: certificate has expired

@bouleerbil maybe nothing to do, but is your distrib up to date ? openssl and ca-certificates must be updated
@bouleerbil : I had the same thing. Used Ubuntu desktop and older installer (0.9.0, but 0.8.8/.9 are said to be best for phones that have problems installing). Error says that the installer can't download the .zip. If you look in .cache/ubports folder there is a 0 byte file with the same name. I downloaded the .zip with a browser, replaced empty file with downloaded one. Then started installer again. Then it worked.
@bouleerbil : You're welcome! Hope it works for you too.
