Does MS Authenticator work under Waydroid?
-
I know that we have two native 2FA apps in Ubuntu Touch (2FA Manager, Authenticator NG).
However, I expect that my employer will soon force me to use MS Authenticator.- Does anyone know if this specific 2FA app works 100% reliably under Waydroid?
- If so: how do I install? (I don't have Waydroid installed yet, looking for easiest way to install both Waydroid and MS app, probably first Waydroid helper app > do I need to turn on GAPPS?)
-
@alter I have not used MS Authenticator on Waydroid in real life, but downloaded it to see whether it basically runs or not because I also might need it in the future. When you open the app, you receive the message that "some features will not be available" since Google Play services are not available (I installed Waydroid without GAPPS). Maybe it works without, but it just needs to be tested.
Remember though that if you need 100% reliability, Waydroid might not be there yet in general.
If you want to give it a try, try to install Waydroid with the instructions given in the respective thread (https://forums.ubports.com/topic/5907/open-ubuntu-touch-to-all-android-applications/116), and MS Authenticator will be available for download in the Aurora Store.

@ra I can't answer specifically for WayDroid, but I installed it on /e/OS (LineageOS for MicroG, NO GAPPS), and it works perfectly. So it should (theoretically) work fine with WayDroid too.

Thanks @ra & @stanwood for your replies!
I would like to test it, but currently my employer still allows other sign-in methods, and I have a working configuration that I would not like to mess up
It's good to know that, in theory, it should work.
If I am forced to switch, I will try it and (if no one else already has by then) report succes in the thread regarding apps that work with Waydroid! -
@alter Ok nice.
And for information there's a thread on what apps work / not work on WayDroid here:https://forums.ubports.com/topic/7240/waydroid-what-android-apps-work-well-for-you
So might be useful to publish the result there also

@stanwood : I will (also) publish my (hopefully) postive experience in the thread you mentioned when I do have to make the jump to MS Authenticator.

Did you know that the microsoft 2FA can be used with an alternative app as well (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/using-a-different-authenticator-app-for-2fa/9202e8b5-d859-445c-80fa-61c0e04a1ebf) E.g. I'm using authenticator NG for it. As I remember I've manually entered that long token that is included in the mentioned QR code to authenitcator NG and use that app now for microsoft 2FA logins.
-
@chris This depends on whether the company relying on the MS 2FA server configures it to allow normal Google Authenticator like apps, as there are plenty who don't, and require using MS Authenticator and it's undocumented closed registration method.

Thanks @chris for the link to the MS page about use of other authenticator apps instead of the MS app.
But from what I understood from our IT department, it's like @dobey wrote and they'll not allow other apps.
Hopefully, there will still be other apps or methods working. Or I'll try MS Authenticator in Waydroid.
