    • Ubuntu Touch is granddaughter approved

My granddaughter is over for a couple days visit, and we decided to go out and play disc golf. I thought it would be a god idea for her to tuck a phone in her pocket and practice calling her dad, her mom, and me.

We practiced hitting the power button, sliding to the left and to the right, finding the contacts icon and finding her parents and me. Got great cell coverage in NWATL area.

I think I need to explore a few of the games next. But Ubuntu Touch on a OnePlus Nord N10 on the Mint network is 8 year old granddaughter approved. Well, we'll need to check messaging next. Granddaughter texts are very emoticon heavy. We haven't checked that out yet.

    • OnePlus Nord N10 5G - It's Minty!

I ran Ubuntu Touch a LONG time ago, on a Nexus 5. I wanted to see where things stood, but didn't feel confident in being able to unlock the bootloader and install UT, so I bought a pre-loaded OnePlus Nord N10 off eBay. I wanted a second cell number, so I ordered a line off Mint that is limited to 5 Gigs of data a month. I just wanted an inexpensive line.

So, I wasn't sure how to activate the physical sim, as I did not load the Mint app on my phone. I poked around, then figured I'd just call my home line from the new cell phone to see if I got dial tone. And it immediately went to Mint Mobile. They activated the line no problem! I didn't need to worry activating my sim at all.

I connected it to home wifi with no trouble at all. I was able to make and receive calls and text. I use KeePassXC on my Ubuntu desktop, Win11 laptop, and KeePass2Android on my Pixel 6a. I asked the forum, and installed KeePassRX. I wasn't sure how to get my database file over, but ended up sftp'ing it off my Raspberry PI. You can't add new entries on KeePassRX (if I read right), but that shouldn't be a major issue.

I tested logging in to a few favorite places with no issue.

I wasn't sure about email. I read about the Dekko2 client, but also saw that it has privileges to every file on the phone. I wasn't sure about that, but decided to give it a try. It works just fine with GMail. I just had to configure an app password. I get notifications when I receive an email.

I had to run errands today, so left my Pixel 6a at home and took the OnePlus. I decided to try UNav. It took a long time to get a GPS signal, but eventually picked it up and it mapped my route. I then tried to put in my home address, but the map didn't recognize it. When I got home, I just favorited my driveway and labelled it Home.

While out, I checked the phone in a Kroger parking lot. The phone showed 5G. I was pretty happy with that.

I'll poke around for a podcast app next. When driving I typically use a navigation app and stream podcasts.Hopefully I can download the podcasts first, while on wifi - then stream them when out driving.

    • RE: KeePass on UT?

@Vlad-Nirky Thanks - I'll mess around with that later. I do have a cron job rsynching keepass and gnucash files from my Ubuntu desktop to my Raspberry Pi. My Windows 11 laptop runs Ubuntu in WSL. I use rsynch to grab current keepass and gnucash files off the pi. I am rusty on setting up keys, so will need to reread some documentation. But that would solve keepass currency issues pretty quickly.

    • RE: KeePass on UT?

Thanks for the info! I installed KeePassRX. I copied over my database file using sftp. Ignorant question - I see how I can copy the url, userid, password in KeePassRX. How do I paste it when I am in the web browser? I'm used to ctrl/c, ctrl/v or in Android just a long press. I opened up a browser but had no idea how to paste the url in.

    • KeePass on UT?

I run KeePassXC on my Ubuntu desktop and Win11 laptop, and KeePass2Android on my Pixel 6a. Is there a version of KeePass for Ubuntu Touch? And how would I install it?

I keep a copy of my database on a Raspberry Pi set up for file sharing (Samba - but I could do different methods if needed). Does Ubuntu Touch support Samba CIFS client on the local network? Or would I need to grab the keepass database using a different method?

Sorry for very basic questions. I ran UT on a Nexus 5 a LONG time ago, and thought I'd try again by cheating and buying a phone with UT pre-installed. At this point I really only can turn it on and connect it to my wireless network - I am very out of practice.

    • RE: Hammerhead on system-image.ubports.com

Thanks! I posted a little blurb on the Nexus 5 Ubuntu Touch G+ group. I also installed Stable, RC-Proposed and Devel-Proposed on my N5. Very slick! I used it as a mini-tablet for a bit, then installed Stable and swapped my SIM out of my daily driver Cyanogenmod phone to my N5. Will use the N5 as a daily driver for a bit.

I would like to figure out the Bluez integration, but think I'll just use the N5 for a while before swapping the SIM card back out and using the N5 for development again.

Would you mind if I posted a link on the Ubuntu Touch Nexus 5 Google Plus group?

Or would you mind providing assistance so I can play with the kernel and compile and load it myself? I keep hanging and timing out when using rootstock and either tarring vivid-preinstalled-touch-armhf.tar.gz or loading android. I haven't been able to build UBTouch from sources and flash it to my N5 manually.

    • Hammerhead on system-image.ubports.com

I see that there is a system image for Nexus 5 on system-image.ubports.com. Very cool! I flashed the image from stable, and see that it is 15.04 r2. Will you also be following the devel and devel-proposed channels? Or should I stick to the system-image.tasmnice.eu server for that?

More importantly, Simon Fels made updates for Bluez 5.x for Canonical supported devices. The community would need to port those changes for the N5 (and the OPO). Who ported hammerhead 15.04 r2 onto ubports server? Would you be able to work with Simon Fels to put in the changes required for Bluez5.x support?
