I interpreted "intrinsic" to relate to the incentives and value systems associated with being able to put something good out into the world. That's what motivates me to contribute to public good databases and information resources and do what I can to support and promote open source. But it's easier to feel that way when you're not worried about paying the bills. When people are under pressure, even the intrinsic motivations may be less effective.

RE: Does anyone know of any recent studies around the effectiveness of different extrinsic (e.g. financial) vs intrinsic (e.g. community altruism) motivators for open source contributors?

I imagine that the strength of the intrinsic incentives is sadly correlated with the job security and stability of many of those best positioned to contribute.
