@richlitt Over time I find that this framing assumes privilege and "laziness" that must be overcome by a "motivator". Magically, unexplicably, students who go through paid internships (GSoC, Outreachy) are able to contribute, and are not able to continue contributing once the internship finishes and they stop getting paid.
