        This week let's do an easy piece of design: The welcome menu.
        Let's think of the first experience for the new user to Ubuntu Touch. How it should be? A quick guide to the main features but how it could look?
        (Take a look at some screenshots below)

        Rules:

        • Final date to send mockups: Tuesday 27th at 20:00 UTC (extended until Friday the 30th)
        • Sign the mockup with the username you base your work from (if applicable) and yours
        • Mockups can be on any format (even hand drawn)

        To keep in mind:

        • stay on topic
        • be nice to each other
        • be open minded
        • go bananas (no limits, let's do speculative design if you want) but
        • don't be upset if your design is not used

        Another planet, another time, another universe!

          @cibersheep

          I can't actually recall precisely what the Welcome Menu includes. Does it go through the use of the Keyboard cursor function? I ask, because I do come across users who don't know about this really useful function.

            @3arn0wl Nope.
            It's still from Canonical's era. It lets you select country, keyboard input, time zone, and shows the different gestures (if I remember correctly).

            I wanted to put some screenshots but I don't know how to make it appear without reflashing my device

              @cibersheep - me neither.
              It's difficult to offer suggestions without being able to see what's there already for reference.

                @cibersheep

                Perhaps the welcome menu ought to become part of the welcome app, so that people who are new to the OS can refer back to it easily? It could be a video1, rather than code...?

                Some time ago I wrote the bulk of a blog article about the swipe functions of the OS - https://ubports.com/de_DE/blog/ubports-blog-1/post/ubuntu-touch-just-another-phone-os-not-at-all-162 - Maybe that could be edited and used...?

                IIRC the welcome app is given when anyone ports UT?

                1 There's a keen UT user who is a professional actor - he's offered his services before now. Sorry, I can't recall his name.

                  @3arn0wl The only downsides I see is that would be something you had to open maybe?
                  Also including a video in the image is not very good idea maybe? Could be online but I would prefer something that is already in the phone.

                    I was thinking that the app could compliment the welcome menu, so that new users could refer to it afterwards.

                      @3arn0wl Ah, sorry. Then, it might work

                      We have a link in System Settings indicator called ยซAbout UT...ยป that goes to askubuntu, it could be a place to lead people to the app, maybe

                        ๐Ÿ™‚ That's a very good idea, @cibersheep
                        Hmmm Perhaps that should link to this forum rather than askubuntu!

                            The app perhaps could have a link to the forum "For further help"

                              So... "About UT" could go to the demo code with a "For further Help" help button at the end?
                              Just need to locate the demo code then! ๐Ÿ˜‰

                                @CiberSheep

                                This from Dalton elsewhere this morning:
                                "You can re-run the Welcome Wizard once per session (reboot) by running truncate -s 0 .config/ubuntu-system-settings/wizard-has-run in the device terminal or via adb shell. "

                                So I ran the code - wasn't that brave of me!? - and took some screen shots. It started, as you said it would, by asking for the language, but I didn't get a screenshot of that, unfortunately. Then:
                                0_1543309939300_1.png

                                0_1543309947600_2.png
                                0_1543309957700_3.png

                                0_1543309973200_4.png

                                I have to say though - it's not the Welcome I was expecting! I was looking for the thing that explained about Swiping from the different edges. ๐Ÿ˜• Does anyone know where that is?

                                However, if we're in polishing mode, perhaps we could do little editing! On the first image, maybe the words could read:
                                "Welcome to Ubuntu Touch 16.04. Let's make sure that your device is ready to use."

                                And on the 4th image, could we have:
                                "Okay... Your device is now ready to use." ?

                                  I believe the tutorial for the gestures comes after those screens but they're pretty random and I think they detect if the user already did the gesture then it won't be shown anymore
                                  Would it make sense to display the gesture tutorial after the welcome screens and just provide a way to skip?
                                  Currently this is how SFOS does it. it was quite good actually although I did not see a way to skip ๐Ÿ™‚

                                        I didn't get the tutorial for the gestures to run - as @kugiigi said, it seems to decide for itself when it should run.

                                        For me, I'd go with what you'd suggested:

                                        • Put the gestures tutorial behind the Ubuntu Help button in the System Indicator.

                                        • Add a tutorial about how the keyboard editing tool works.

                                        • And add a link button to the Support page of the forum here.

                                        (I'd also edit the wording on the 1st and 4th images.)

                                          Actually those screens were updated for the recent switch to 16.04 xenial so the texts are more of that context.
                                          But I guess that should be changed again with something more for first time users.
