@Nathan123 If the screen has fastboot with funny creature like face you can just press the continue button on the installer. let the installer do it's stuff and you will then get asked to put it into recovery volume down and power button. It can be a bit confusing at times

@Lakotaubp Hi. I put the phone in "fast boot", by clicking "Reboot to bootloader". Also the installer on computer is saying "scanning for fastboot", but it's not seeing it. ..... I'm at a loss.

Sorry pressed send by mistake. 15 sec ADB from here https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979 When it's installing select system wide when given the option. Then connect your device and from command prompt test it works think if you type fastboot devices it should show device same with ADB type ADB devices you may get a grant permission box on the device watch out for it.

@Lakotaubp No. I'm on Ubuntu now. Switched over after getting frustrated.

@Nathan123 Ok use the terminal and type the same things. Let's see if ADB and fastboot are working and detecting your phone.

Just reread your first post when you say rooted what do you mean. Where any partions changed or was it encrypted. If encrypted you will need to wipe and factory reset it. If partions changed they will need to be reset first, maybe reflash android or linage first.

@Nathan123 You will only need to if you changed any of them. Check out adb/fastboot first

Was Android > 5.1 installed before? You might need to go back to stock Android from an older verison to get the cache partition right.
