I also tried Xournal on my Nexus, but it isn't very smooth. -
@yarai JFI You would need to follow the instructions here first for the M10 before flashing Ubports Ubuntu Touch.

Also, for comfortable note taking I would suggest an external keyboard. The on screen keyboard is good for short messages, but becomes a challenge when typing longer prose.
But then I wonder if a Pinebook Pro would not be a better fit for your use case? -
@Capsia I'd probably prefer a more fully-fledged note app (that supports editing and creating pdf's and all that), but thanks for your input!

@arubislander The thing is that I want to write in it as if it was a notebook. That's the kind of notes that I'm talking about. I already have a laptop, so all I'm looking forward to is a relatively cheap tablet that I can use for this function alone.

@dobey Indeed, I considered that one. The downside was that I heard stylus support wouldn't be very present on this batch. It's already out of stock anyway...

@yarai I'm pretty sure the BQ M10 doesn't have a stylus either. Also, UT doesn't have support for drawing tablet stuff yet, and I don't know if an individual app would work if it did support Wacom things for example.

@dobey You mean not having a stylus or not having overall stylus support? (I kinda put this thread up to ask this too, since if someone had any experience in taking notes in there they would obviously be able to tell me that.)
I haven't yet received the response of anyone who uses Xournal on this specific device, so I'll probably mark as solved soon. From the current outlook (specially from @Capsia's response) it doesn't seem too likely that I will choose this tablet, but thank you all for your inputs until now!

Ah, I should have looked into what kind of app Xournal was before chiming in. I went ahead and installed it on my M10 FHD to see how it would work. I used my finger because I couldn't find any of my styluses. I have two of those rubber tipped ones, not very high quality, more designed for tapping than for drawing, so I don't think the experience would have been too different if I had used one of them.
I noticed two things that worked differently.
- The first was importing images. The dialog that appears after clicking on the icon is too wide for the screen. The filesystem cannot be navigated and the dialogue cannot be dismissed with either a confirmation or a cancelation, because all the relevant controls are offscreen.
- When selecting another drawing tool I needed to tap outside the toolbar before starting to draw on the page. Failing to do so would result in a straight line drawn from the direction of the toolbar icon to the first point of contact on the page.
Other than that, if a precise enough capacitive touch stylus exists, then it could be quite usable. But I don't know if such a products is available.

Xournal works ok in Libertine, but it is a bit clunky in UT currently. The native UT apps, Pluma and FingerPaint to me also lack resolution and flexibility to be that good for note taking as well.
Slightly off topic of this forum - but Xournal works well on 10" and above x86 tablets - I've used both standard Ubuntu (with Gnome3 DE), and customized Xubuntu (with Onboard osk and Touchegg multi-touch-gesture configurator packages installed) to run it on a number of Intel based tablets that originally came with Windows (e.g. Dell 7275, Dell 7140, Samsung Slate 7) - lots of options for these "2 in 1"'s that work decently with Linux can be found on the second hand market for reasonable prices, including the Microsoft Surface and Lenovo X1 tablet lines.
Besides Xournal, another nice stylus note taking app for standard Linux is "Write" from

And Unity 7 is now fixed for Ubuntu 20.04 if you'd still prefer the Ubuntu Touch look and feel. It is lighter and snappier than gnome. I have a Thinkpad X1 tablet and can confirm all works including pen. I also have a Chuwi hi10 air. All works (except camera on one version-gc2355 no driver) but it does take work to patch it. I have read from multiple sources the Chuwi Hi10 X works out of the box, camera and all with Ubuntu.
