System updates

I see application updates appearing every couple of days as I have Auto download enabled on WiFi. Will system updates appear the same way, or is there a separate mechanism for them? (I have only had Ubuntu Touch a few weeks.)

Auto download applies only to the system updates.
You'll have a notification and you'll have to manually start the system's installation.Apps are downloaded only when you tap on the update button.
For apps as you noticed, you have to go in the update section of the settings or in the Open Store's app. -
