I have carried out a command line test of the microphone and it is just making static noise. Followed the instructions here:

Those instructions are for Ubuntu 20.04 not Ubuntu Touch. It is unlikely therefore to work on your phone.

@cliffcoggin Got any other suggestions? All functions executed without error, or needing to install anything. It recorded buzzing/static similar to whatis heardon calls.

Reverted to the RC and carried out a complete reset. Still no mic and same faults on the sound recorder.

I would try to burn another image on the SD of any other OS, for example Mobian. That way you're out of doubt.

@bolly cheers, makes sense. Will revert to stock.

@doctrucker
Did you consider a loosy electrical connection to the mic board ?
Did you try to remove board and clean contacts ?Did you try to get help or infos from Pine 64 forums, for instance as this thread : http://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=15687 ?

@cliffcoggin while the instructions mention 20.04, they are general enough to also work in 16.04. But probably not on Ubuntu Touch, because of confinement.

Yup appears it was dodgy contacts to the microhone. Hadn't occurred to me that there were any spring contacts in the signal path, very close to the vibrator motor too.
Wasn't anything obviously amiss but a strip pull up a few spring contacts and rebuild fixed it.
As it happens the revorder app still doesn't work. Will try the command prompt test and respond here for completeness.

@doctrucker
Do not hesitate to clean once or twice a year every contact in the phone with alcohol or cleaning fluid F2.That kind of issue is current on pressure contacts, it's for instance one of the first cause of hardware failure in Fairphones.
