Service dropped USA OPO OTA-17
-
@billboy5690 Got a Pixel 3a working on ATT android 12. Not sure what to do next.
-
@tuxy This just happened to me a day or so ago on a Pixel 3a (ATT). Had to revert to the 3g tier in settings to get my phone service back. Strange.
-
@alyosha oh no,....that may mean I cant port the pixel 3a phone it may not work? They abandoned 3g networks here. My Oneplus has no 3g service anymore and why I bought a pixel 3a which is working in android 12. Afraid to mess with it now. Thanks.

Sorry, did you mean to say 'flash' perhaps, or 'install'? After all, the Pixel 3a is already ported (meaning that the files for installation have been created).
-
@moem If the pixel 3a relies on 3G service for the phone to work then neither the Oneplus One nor the Pixel 3a will work here is what I mean to say. My daily driver was the Oneplus until the phone part stopped working since 3G shutdown. My concern is if I port the new pixel 3a I will have the same result since it also relies on 3G for the phone to work?
-
@tuxy The pixel 3a is 4g compatable.I have mine working on ATT they have shutdown 3g.
Dont know who your service provider is though. -
@billboy5690 Thank you for the clarification. I'm not a programmer and have a time remembering how I ported the OnePlus. I guess my next step will be Hallium on pixel 3a.
Thanks again.
Forgot to mention just recently had my new 3a activated on ATT network. The carrier I had on the Oneplus UT was Consumer Cellular.

Hi @tuxy,
What Moem tried to say is that:
My concern is if I
portflash the new pixel 3a I will have
I'm not a programmer and have a time remembering how Iportedflashed the OnePlus.I would use "free" instead of flash but that's my political spirit at work
Porting is used when referring to the act of creating a custom build of Ubuntu Touch for a specific device.
When a "port" is created then users can "flash" it on their own device and doing so "freeing" said device. As for what Billboy mentioned, I was under the impression that VoLTE didn't work yet for Ubuntu Touch except for the PinePhone (which has other major issues).
If it actually works, that's very good but work is done by porters to bring VoLTE to all maintained Ubuntu Touch devices. What will be those supported devices is not clear and definitive but the Pixel3a is definitely one of the development platform for the core team... -

That is correct, I think. But it's not what I was talking about.
I was just trying to point out that there is a difference between porting on one hand, and installing or flashing on the other hand.
The first one is what a developer does: making it possible for users like you and me to install Ubuntu Touch on their phone.
Since (like me) you are not a developer, it seems to me like you installed (or flashed) Ubuntu Touch on your device, you did not port it.It's semantics, but it's important to use these terms correctly in my point of view, to avoid confusion.

Very true. Even the term flash confused me for a long time. What is wrong with install? Why do computer geeks have to invent meaningless jargon when there are perfectly good meaningful terms (in English at least) already in existence?
Those questions are rhetorical by the way. I realised long ago it is done to try to confer on themselves a sense of exclusivity.
-
@cliffcoggin Every trade and profession has it's own jargon and shothand. I don't think it is meant to be devisive, just convenient for the people involved. My trade has some very obscure terms, but we all know what they mean but non bellhangers are often confussed by them. In the bellhanging world the language has evolved over nearly a thousand years. Just think how obsscure computer geek language will become given that sort of length of time to develop!
-
@applee Sorry for the confusion. I prefer the term install but what do I know.? Thanks
-
@billboy5690 Could you please point me to the thread explaining the process of installing UT on a fresh pixel 3a with android 12 already installed?
Thank you
-
@tuxy I own a Pixel 3a and an Lg Nexus 4. They are all running Ubutntu Touch (which I love). However, you will only be able to make phone calls by utilizing Linphone and Sip (as someone else mentioned). Until Ubuntu Touch is able to support Volte (Voice over Long Term Evolution), you will not be able to make phone calls by connecting to one of the USA networks. A few may still be working, but by July, 2022 they will all be gone. So let us all pray for Volte implementation in Ubuntu Touch. They are working on it, but it is evidently a really difficult implementation to develop.
-
@desolom Thank you for that clarification. A monumental task to make UT a reality to say the least and hats off the the crew who made it possible. Not ready to begin using the android I bought to install UT on but is the only phone I have now. I will continue to support UBports as I am not giving up on UT yet.
I hope developers are blessed with the knowledge and money to continue.
Thank you
-
@billboy5690 Same. Still going after a week or so on the 2g/3g setting -- weird.
-
Hi @alyosha
Maybe it's one of the steps.
Forbid 3G only devices to join the network.
For 4G devices force VoLTE.
Then later cut out all remaining 3G...It seems logical they didn't remove all 3G relays all at once so if your area is still active then you have an unknown amount of time until end of service.
-
@desolom Damn -- let's hope they can pull off a hat trick. Rather go back to a land line than kiss AAPL or GOOG's asses.
-
@applee Really appreciate that reply -- thought it was "cockpit error" on my part.

@alyosha
There is always a logical explanation.Mine is possible... craziness is always an option but unlikely
