hi...
so i am tentatively trying out UT and i really like it despite my problems with hotspotting and usb tethering neither currently working on my nexus 4..
for me having 1 of these working is crucial to my UT transistion. due to no home broadband and the modern flexibility this does allow.
perhaps i need a more modern phone with UT on...or maybe I can still get it to work.
by chance I recently picked up a samsung s4 with lineageos on.
this again was for me to compare and learn, which im still doing...
i do prefer UT but hotspoting works on the other...so gping forward my question to those more experienced than me is..
if i was logging into online banking via these systems would you consider them trustworthy and secure?
as i still have an android 11 samsung a10, which system or all all as trustworthy as the other ? !i understand the nexus4 will not be supported in the next iteration of UT system....is this right?
is that due soon?
if i used my UT phone with an old UT system on does this diminish security of the device...?
forgive my technical limited insights..but in this strange modern world, choosing a sensible device to use going forward interests me, because..
you become quite attached to these devices as ypu use them more
thanks for listening

@artmusic At the moment I would be tempted not to log in to banking online via a browser unless behind a firewall. This will divide opinion as some get quite paranoid about security and banking is one process that really does need to be secure.
Some also get quite pithy about Android (and iOS) due to the amount of your personal data that they scrape off your device.
I have asked many a time about devices and what is going to get left behind on the migration to 20.04. It is a hot potato with vague answers. There has been a lot of difficulty in the migration as UT will always be behind due to getting hold of vendor BLOBs (like drivers for hardware) that are usually proprietary and other developmental issues. By the time the migration has moved to 20.04, it will be time to move to the next LTS. This is the problem with community enthusiast led projects that the likes of Apple throw vast saithes of money at, and Google hawk Android out to manufacturers to add their bits for their devices (why you never really get a full "vanilla" Android experience).
As I have said previously, some countries (mainly the USA) are dropping 2G/3G and 5G is a whole new ball game that brings it own issues with Telecom processes for the community developers.
A lot of this is beyond me even though I have done a lot of hardware and telecoms work in my younger days and now as a hobby. I would like to get more involved, but time is always an issue and at my age you have other things to do like painting the shed or being told what you haven't done by the good lady wife.
I have an Android phone for things that I cannot do at all on UT, and don't trust to do on UT, Internet banking is one, work is another. My Redmi Note 7 though is really good and I have used it a lot as a daily UT driver. The only down side of newer phones is the 6" and bigger screens easier to smash and don't fit well in your pocket. Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 for me are the perfect size, I still have the even smaller BQ Aquaris e4.5, it's a bit slow and I use to lend it out for family members to give UT a go (I made the mistake of trading all my old phones in for a Mac Mini and one BQ went, not letting this one go).
Sorry for the longish answer, a lot is my opinion and what I have noticed is there is a disparity between software developers ideals and hardware repairer/re-furbisher ideals - to me if the phone doesn't work with a network, you still have WiFi and a perfectly viable mini tablet. -
I read your reply with interest..thank you
all this evolving technology with all its pros and cons, is quite another world...
when someone uses hotspot or usb, to a desktop computer, lets say in tjis instance windows 10, is that then using the built in firewall in windows 10?
im afraid i will probably just open a can of worms in asking such a question
i use ubuntu 20 on a desktop is their a firewall i should add.
saying all this, i try not to leave wifi or mobile data on....i do a task then turn it off.
part of my philosophy of not being online 24/7...
I shall progress slowly forward
hopefully
thankyou

Hi,
I'm reacting to the "firewall" thing.
I'm not sure you really understand what a firewall does?!A firewall acts on the data traffic incoming or outgoing to simplify its job is to prevent incoming unsolicited traffic.
It won't protect you when accessing your banking account. When browsing, the user is willingly connecting to a server, in doing so rendering a firewall useless if the server is compromised.
Of course a firewall can block known malicious addresses or allow only known IPs but it is restrictive and not that effective. To go back to the main topic here : Ubuntu Touch
The hotspot is a bit tricky to activate but it works for most of the devices.Regarding the move to 20.04, the technical limitations are unknown at the moment so the foundation (or anyone) is not able to give a statement on whether a device CAN or CANNOT be ported to 20.04.
The foundation already gave a list of devices on which they are working. This list will most probably see a port to 20.04.
For other devices it will depend on the porter or if someone step in to do the job ; the core team will be able to help but they cannot port each of the tens of devices supported right now.I hope this clarifies some things.
