@keneda It would be nice if someone who is in the know-how could figure out how to make VoLTE a reality for Ubuntu Touch.

@glre et al., We have really bright people working on it, but it is an incredibly difficult problem. In the meantime, the Linphone app works now with some set up, using a sip provider. I recommend Jmp.chat

            Hi @glre
For more information on the VoLTE effort you can also check out oFono project and Halium they might have newer information.

Ubuntu Touch rely on Halium for many ports and Halium utilizes oFono for modem management (calls, texts and data). So VoLTE has to be solved in oFono first then integrated in Halium and then integrated to Ubuntu Touch.

As rocket2inifinty stated, it is a very dificult issue to address because implementation of VoLTE depends on operators and there is no standard to rely on.

@rocket2nfinity Heh -- that's what I thought, too. Still working after a ~week or so. Weird.

I have the same problem. Had to set Connection type to 2G/3G, in order to make a call. I can send/receive SMS but no MMS. The only strange thing is that my Nexus 5 (hammerhead) works. Although, my connection type is set to '2G/3G', phone's toolbar shows H or L icon and I can make calls, receive, and send SMS/MMS. My carrier is Red Pocket GSMA (AT&T)

@amuva A few weeks ago I began rushing to port my number back to my old sprint iphone (undesirable) because of the 3G shutdown when I too noticed just last night that I could still make and receive calls on 3G on my 3a with Red Pocket GSMA (thanks to the posters above). DOES ANYONE know what is going on--are they phasing out the service, or shutting it down altogether as I was informed? Or, are they leaving some service up because of the backlash/backlog? In my case, the porting process was supposed to take 40 minutes to go from Red Pocket to Sprint. The 40 minute process has turned into 2 WEEKS because no one can get through to Red Pocket!

I am somewhat heartened to know that I am not the only one, as so many are figuratively scratching their heads about the status of 3G--what a clusterf**k of a 'transition'--although it would be a lot more heartening to see the need for such a transition and the process for individuals to accomplish it laid out in a coherent, simple and convincing manner.

By the way, I get and send SMS but still no MMS regardless of the network woes. Does anyone know how I could get and send MMS on the 3a?

@rocket2nfinity I switched off data roaming (can't see/find a cell roaming) button and calls and texts still work.

                      Phone: Pixel 3a
                      OS: UT 16.04 OTA-22 Stable
Carrier: Ting (on i believe Verizon)
                      Started using: 4/23/22

I am getting much the same problem.

                      2G/3G/4G
On a fresh restart, I do have access to 4G. Text and calls and mobile internet work. However, this only lasts about an hour. After this happens, calls and text and mobile internet stop working. UT says it is "Searching" under Cellular Data. Sometimes it cuts out sooner. I can do something with constant internet access (play an audiobook or stream music) to keep it going. But the longest I have seen access to 4G maintained is about an hour. MMS never works.

                      2G/3G
After that happens, I can switch to 3G, and calls and text work all the time. But not internet. Not MMS.

I have noticed Wifi disconnects from time to time. I can select the router and reconnect, but it happens. But pretty rarely. I have never been able to use MMS, send or receive, on any setting above.

@rocket2nfinity : would it be possible to write a noob-friendly setup guide for Linphone on this forum? What is it, why use it, where to get it, how to install and setup, using it. I guess more and more people will experience 2/3G shutdowns, and 4G calling (VoLTE) is not available yet in Ubuntu Touch, and may still take a while to develop. Having a kind of workaround (and knowing how to go about it to get and setup) would be helpful. Or is the instruction device-specific, and do you refer to Telegram for instructions because of that?

@alter No, not device specific. I'll try to do it this week and give people a month to test it out before the big cutoff - July 1.

Only problem is where to store the Linphone app since it is not in the openstore for 64bit devices (hence why we've been pushing people to Telegram).

@alter We also refer to Telegram because we can better help you when you get stuck - which is highly likely if you are not very technical.

@rocket2nfinity : Thanks for taking the time to write a step-by-step guide for Linphone on UT, looking forward to it! I understand it is not a simple one-click install. But even when the setup process should prove too difficult for myself, I'm sure your guide will be of use to other members of the community! In the guide, you could refer to the Telegram channel address only for those who run into problems. By the way, do you know the reason for Linphone app not being in OpenStore for certain devices? Obviously, it would be easy to have it there. Kind regards, Alter

@alter Still in Beta, not finished. Needs a set up error fixed, and could stand a few features present in android/win/linux Linphone such as message support and a dailer.

@rocket2nfinity : Ah, okay. Hope it gets to OpenStore soon. The easier, the better for most. I believe more apps are Beta in OpenStore, so this in itself shouldn't be a problem for publishing there. If it's not yet as feature-rich as the Android/ Windows/ iOS versions: we can live with that, providing it has the basic functionality.
