How do you enable 4G LTE on the Nexus 4?
-
I recently bought an LG Nexus 4 off ebay to try Ubuntu Touch on and i would like to know how to enable 4G LTE on it.
My main phone is an iphone 11, but i have a desktop and a laptop that both have Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on them, and i wanted to try Ubuntu Touch as well.
I bought a prepaid AT&T SIM card for it and i should receive it on Sunday.
I don't really want to upgrade my phone right now and i would like to see if i can enable 4G on it.
Thanks for any help, -
The Nexus4 does not have 4G capabilities.
The modem is GSM/HSPA which is 3.5G or something like this...I'm sorry but this is not a software limitation but a hardware issue. The modem needs to be 4G compatible.
4G LTE is enabled by default in Ubuntu Touch but it works only if there is a 4G modem -
@ubuntutouchluvr You cannot enable 4G on the device as the hardware doesn't support it. It is 2G/3G only. The work round that is coming or already here is SIP over Wi-Fi. I see you are using AT&T which means you are in the US and providers are rapidly switching off 2G and 3G.

How do I enable that SIP workaround? That sounds interesting, and Iād like to try that before I spring for a better phone.
And thanks for the replies, guys

I think i can use Skype on my Nexus 4 phone without having to need 4G VoLTE.

@ubuntutouchluvr
You don't need VoLTE to use skype, only 2/3/4G data. 4G data ("LTE") is marked "L" on UT phones when running. -
@keneda Thanks for the info, keneda. I tried a Skype app on UT, but it doesn't seem to work all that well on my phone, the signal is too weak. They keep saying, Try again later.
I bought a T-Mobile sim card kit from Tracfone, hopefully i can make calls with that (if the sim card is compatible with the Nexus 4). -

Maybe also because this is a webapp and wasn't updated since 2019...

@ubuntutouchluvr You could try making your own webapp using Webber https://open-store.io/app/webber.timsueberkrueb and give it a try.
-
@keneda Well, the text message part of it works okay, tho
-
@lakotaubp Have never attempted to create an app before.

@ubuntutouchluvr Have a look at Webber it is very straight forward even I can do it. It is not like creating a full app from scratch at all.
