@jezek did a work that is currently in review that may help fixing or understand better what is going on. Hope it will land on next OTA
It is already testable if you are in devel channel:
        sudo ubports-qa install PR_nuntium_18

I have now updated to OTA-24. Unfortunately, i still have the same issues. Whenever someone tries to send me an mms such as an image, i get the message "Could not fetch the MMS message. Maybe the MMS settings are incorrect or cellular data is off?"

I am pretty sure my MMS settings are correct (i can still send images without an issue), and i've tried receiving with both wifi on and off. But still nothing.

It's a bit frustrating since this is the only major issue with Ubuntu Touch i'm experiencing, but it's kind of an important one.

Any thoughts as to what else i can try?

@fizz it seems the fix mentioned by @lduboeuf did not make it into this OTA. There is not much you can do if you are not able or willing to test the fix as he suggested in his post.

                @arubislander
The "what's new" section listed one of the changes as:
"messaging-app and sms/mms middleware: Various fixes (lduboef, jezek)",
so i thought that was the fix for which i had been waiting.

lduboeuf said was that it might make it into the next OTA. It sounded like it was already being tested ("currently in review" he said).

Is there anyway to confirm whether this intended fix was included in OTA-24 or not?

@fizz ah, you are correct, the referenced MR was merged in 8 months ago.

@arubislander @Fizz No, the MR referenced by @lduboeuf in post above is not merged yet. Only a very small fix got into the OTA-24.

                      OK thanks.

So if i want to try the new version, i first have to change to the dev channel, and then run the command that lduboeuf posted above, yes?

If I want to restore to the current (non-dev) version of numtium, how would i do that? I just like having a backup plan in case something goes wrong with the dev version.

                      Thanks!

It doesn't have to be the dev channel, rc is fine too. I'm on rc all the time, it's very stable.

I hope the patch fixes your trouble. If not, write me, I can try to help you debug it.

I wasn't worried about losing data- more if the messenging app didn't work at all and I needed to restore it. (Better to have something than nothing... heh).

But i decided to give it a try per your note. I switched to the RC channel (per jezek) in my system settings, then opened a terminal and ran:

                              sudo ubports-qa install PR_numtium_18

But i immediately get an error:

                              CRITICAL:ubports-qa:PPA not found

                              Am i missing something?

                                  Doh! You're right. Thanks.

I have it installed now. At the end of the install, i got a warning that it failed to remount root filesystem, and a warning to consider rebooting. I'm thinking (hoping) that is normal, so i've rebooted the phone.

I will let everyone know how it's going a bit later today. Thanks!

So after the reboot, my messaging list seems to indicate that i sent a blank message to a previously used number (one i know, but not on my contacts list) essentially at the same time it was rebooting. I've no idea if it actually sent an empty message, it's just how it looks in my message history. That number / message was not previously in my history, and i certainly just didn't enter it myself.

I had my wife send me a test image, and unfortunately, the behavior seems to be exactly as it was before-
"Could not fetch the MMS message. Maybe the MMS settings are incorrect or cellular data is off?".

She's off to work now, so any more tests i'll have to do later this evening.

@fizz When I was testing MMS, I happened to send MMS to myself. Maybe it could be useful in your tests.

@fizz I'm sorry the fix didn't work for you. Feel free to go back to stable.

It would be helpful that you provide a ~/.cache/upstart/nuntium.log contents for debug purposes.

                                        1. Restart your phone. That should clear the log file.
                                        2. Let somebody send you an MMS (and/or try to send one to yourself).
                                        3. Locate the log file and copy its content here via some file sharing service (pastebin, gist). DON'T FORGET to redact the log file, the phone number of the sender is somewhere there. Replace the digits if you don't want to expose them to the internet.

It seems this update has caused some other issue as well- whenever i try to restart the phone, it takes much longer than before.

It actually seems to reset in the middle of the reboot: i see the black UBPorts screen, and then the Magenta screen. But then it goes black and i see the black UBPorts screen again, and then Magenta, and finally to the login page. The whole process takes several minutes.

So after i get this log for you, i think i'll go back to the stable version. How do i uninstall the rc version and go back to the current stable version?

(I presume you want the log from the rc version, but if you want the log from the stable i can do that.)

OK, i restarted the device (this time it seemed to reset about 4 times before getting to the login screen). My wife sent me a test image.

Fwiw, i've noticed that with this modified version i get two simultaneous notifications from the OS, but not two messages.

Now, how do i go back to the previous (stable) version? sudo ubports-qa uninstall PR_nuntium_18 would leave me with no messenger at all, wouldn't it?

Flashing the device using the installer would remove the changes to nuntium and put you back on Stable channel in one swoop. Just select Stable and make sure not to click the button to wipe the device clean. Then it comes back just as it was.
Last night I botched my install of Jezek's fix - it froze/disconnected halfway through. Couldn't remove it or redo the install, and I wound up having to flash the device. So I can vouch for that working, and it shouldn't take much longer than reverting nuntium and switching to Stable separately.
I'd have guessed that you could also use the command that you typed, except with "remove" in place of "uninstall", to revert to how nuntium was before, but I don't know nearly enough about that to say so with confidence.
