for ubports i just want to request this feature "Night Light". the ubuntu touch. is very good operating system manage by ubports but the only thing missing here. is eye protection. I hope my request will be heard. it's just not for me. many ubuntu touch users will also benefit from this when you add this feature. Night Light for eye protection.

          Hi @chan1234

The topic got discussed some times ago.
          https://forums.ubports.com/topic/5132/night-mode-app-available?_=1676371150226

The answer is still the same, nothing that I know off is available as a hack and nothing is officially worked on.

In the meantime, I grew a personal opinion on the topic.
I don't have my sources available, but I read that there was no solid proof of it having any effect.
So basically if you need to rest your eyes, keep them away from your phone, that's low tech but 100% effective.
I have no proof but in case the red shift is useless then the net benefit will be a false idea of improvement in your eye safety which is worse.

So to ease your eyes you can lower the luminosity, use dark theme and the best avoid unnecessary screen time.

Just to state another time this is my personal opinion on the topic and scientific study may prove me wrong.
I'm just sharing so you can choose what is best for you.
And if someone come up with this feature I'm sure it will be welcome by many.

A better discussion of implementing this feature is:

            https://forums.ubports.com/topic/2848/what-s-the-situation-with-blue-light-filtering-on-ubuntu-touch/

The tl;dr: it needs to be implemented (in Mir) and someone who thinks it important needs to their spend time doing that.

I don't think it's consensual, but a quick search led me to a recent scientific study linking blue light exposure to decreased sleep quality and cognitive function (DOI: 10.3389/fphys.2022.943108).
May be subjective, where some people benefit from it, some don't; in my own (admittedly anecdotal case) it has a noticeable effect in eye strain when working late, and particularly when using multiple displays with/without blue light filtering.

I'm just sharing so you can choose what is best for you.

Even if it's just a placebo, ultimately, for people to choose, the feature itself would need to be implemented, just as light/dark themes.
Not a priority by any means, but it would be cool to have this on UT, particularly when Android supports it.

I am not entirely sure how Android supporting Night Light is relevant to the discussion at hand. As far as I can tell, this project is not chasing feature parity with Android.

Having said that, the desirability of this feature is also not in question. What is lacking is hands to do it. And until that lack is met by someone from the community with the right amount of interest, time and / or skill, no amount of +1'ing for the feature will make it happen sooner.

I use locked brightness at level 4. This solves the problem - the screen is darker and doesn't hurt my eyes anymore.

@arubislander the comment I replied was discussing the merits of the feature itself and not (just) the feasibility of its implementation, which, as you say, is dependent on interest and time from able developers. +1 from UT users can, at the very least, marginally influence the 'interest' part of it.

(and even if UT does not seek 'feature parity with Android', it's a fact that Android is the industry standard on the devices that UT is targeted to/developed on, and that UT aims to be an alternative)

                      Hi @hlbkv

This is getting a bit off topic, but let me explain.
Studies show that blue light has an effect yes.

But another study I found (and lost) tend to disprove any positive effect of the so called redshift apps such as implemented in other OSes. Such software solution were said to simply not work as imagined and that the amount of blue light emitted is still comparable.
A physicist friend of mind agrees and told me it was the way LED are manufactured that is the reason...

What remains is what Arubislander stated.
No comparison with another OS is an admissible argument here ; we don't care about what others do, we do our own thing.
And to go back on topic, without willing people with skills, motivation and time, nothing will change despite many best wishes.

Since this needs to be implemented in Mir, this feature will have to wait once we move to Mir 2.x and fortunately Marius already have it working so there's progress πŸ˜„
Someone just needs to be willing and skilled to implement it πŸ˜„
