Estimates On VoLTE Arrival
-
Greetings,
Does anyone have any estimates on when VoLTE will be available for the Pixel 3? I live in the US and without it, it's a no go. Really looking forward to it! -
@thebroison Unfortunately, there are no devs working on this. Sounds like a new port for 3a/3aXL might be needed / the easiest option? The guy who was maintaining the Pixel 3a, who has done a LOT for UT, can't test on his own carrier due to no VoLTE support, didn't get the help he needed, and has moved on.
While we all like to see older devices maintained, my impression is that with the amount of challenge required, it might be better placed into newer devices at this point. This said, there are certainly others who'd like to make VoLTE work on the Pixel 3a, and if people pull it off, that's fantastic. But like all these community efforts, it'll be down to you and the others involved to make it happen.
You'll find that there are other posts on this topic on the forum, and in the Telegram UT North American Carriers Issues channel, so if you want to try to help, you may not be alone!

@wally Thank you very much, that is helpful information.

@wally BTW, I am referring to the Pixel 3, not the 3a, don't know if that makes a difference. Thanks

@thebroison I think UT is available for the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL, but not for the Pixel 3: https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/

@thebroison Ah, I missed that in your post. Yep, @johndoe is right, there is no port for the the Pixel 3, and as such, no existing community of UT users with a Pixel 3, like there is with a Pixel 3a/3aXL.
Unless you're able to port it, your best bet might be to see if you can find a used device that's already supported. For example, people in the USA are now using VoLTE with Xiaomi devices, I believe. You'd want to look into carrier compatibility, supported devices with VoLTE (which is still in testing, unclear which devices it will land on), and what's available/affordable.
