Call for testing: Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0

@peat_psuwit said in Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 Beta 1 is now available for testing:
gsettings set io.ubuntu-touch.system-settings.update offer-development-release true
I am currently on 24.04 daily (567) and daily is the only release channel listed in the updater, does the above command apply only to 20.04 or will it be the same on 24.04?
-
@Futura Isn't daily the development release?
I am thinking this might be causing unintended confusion... it seems people might be thinking that 'daily' means it is deemed suitable for daily usage, while in fact it means there are daily updates, since it is the development version.
-
@arubislander Someone seem to think that way. They unintentionally installed Noble but I think they used the installer. Does the installer default to that? Or maybe the daily tag really caused the confusion
-
@kugiigi It currently defaults to that I think, but then the naming causes additional confusion, as it doesn't alert the casual user that 'here be dragons'.

Yes AFAIK it is the development and it is far less problematic than 20.04 on my device.
I just want to switch from dev to beta channel prior to 24.04 beta 2. but it seems to only see daily in the updater on the device. -
I just checked the installer to see what was default, and yeah, first one listed in the Installer is 24.04-1.x/daily. Somebody has filed an issue on the installer's gitlab, as per another thread.
@Futura if the updater isn't giving you the option, I did see that there's a 24.04-1.x/rc, which is Release Candidate. You could flash the system to that with the installer, and just make sure the option that says Wipe Data (or something like that) isn't checked.
For 20.04, the installer has /stable, /rc, and /devel. I hadn't considered this potential for confusion before, but I guess "daily driver" is an awfully common term, and I can imagine new users being confused. Either going back to calling it "devel" or changing it to "nightly" might avoid the confusion.

Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 Beta 2 is now available.
Notable changes
- It's now possible to send and receive MMS again as the underlying components for MMS have been fixed. Additionally, there's now a dialog telling users to disable Wi-Fi and enable mobile data before sending MMS.
- Bluetooth pairing in System Settings has been fixed.
- You can now disconnect from wireless display from the virtual touchpad on the phone's screen.
- Bug fixes and stability improvements across the system.
Known issues
- It's a long-standing issue that fingerprint sensor on Fairphone 5 does not always work. It's unclear when this might happen. This might manifest itself as keyboard for the login password prompt jumps up and down very rapidly; this is due to Lomiri repeatedly getting error from fingerprint sensor.
If you're already running Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 Beta 1, you'll be offered Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 Beta 2 automatically. Otherwise, follow the same instructions as outlined above.

We're going to improve installer so that it group channels by Ubuntu Touch releases, prefer stable channel, and avoid showing development release. This should largely solve confusion, at least in the installer.
As for the channel name, now that you've said it, I'll agree that
nightly
is probably a better name (we want to avoiddevel
because of an earlier mistake). Unfortunately, at this point it's going to be a hassle to change the channel name as a number of tools now depend on this. So... it is what it is. -
@wally
Hey, there is zero confusion on the name for the record. I did make a joke on a thread about dailying a "daily" b/c its unstable but I knew full well what I was getting into and it was the best option at the time.
Hate to re-flash as this was the install where the stars aligned and things worked that have not the other 9 million times I have installed troubleshooting. Is there a beta channel for the FP5 or is that just considered the daily channel?
-
@kaelte Same for me on Fairphone 3+ Also Notes blank and Music player doesn't show cover art. Apart from the bugs nice graphics but switching back to stable for now
-
@colw Music Player is one of the few apps working for me, including displaying album covers.
But still no improvement for Document Viewer and OSM Scout Server.FairPhone 5 UT 24.04 (r570)
-
@peat_psuwit The FP5 issue isn't exclusive on Noble as it also happens on focal from time to time. When it happens, a reboot usually fixes it.
-
@peat_psuwit Makes sense. I'm sure if daily is gone from installer and things are laid out in order from Stable to RC to Daily, that's clear enough.
Amazing news about MMS on Noble! Sincere thanks to those who sorted it out! -
@rund_europa Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 Beta 2, seems to fix the Dekko2 issues. I downloaded it today.
