Pixel 3a/3aXL and Noble (24.04) Experiences
-
Hi everyone! This thread is to track experiences with Noble 24.04 on the Pixel 3a/3aXL. Thanks to @fredldotme for his hard work and the great port as always! I test drove it over the weekend and everything was pretty snappy.
I did come across two issues.
The first issue was with the camera app. The first time the camera would work. If I closed the app and locked the screen and then tried to go back to the camera app, the app would show a black screen and would not take any pictures.
The second issue was with Libertine. Libertine apps from before the OS upgrade wouldn't load. I removed the Libertine containers and will rebuild these. I'm assuming the OS update was the issue here rather than actual functionality.
Of course, VoLTE didn't work, but that was expected. This is something our community is trying our best to work on.
If there is anything else anyone wants to contribute, please post here. Thanks!

Hello,
I would also like to thank you for your work on 24.04, it is excellent.
And I will add my experience:
Pixel 3A XL 24.04 clean installation via USB.
Encryption enabled.
Just like the previous camera, it freezes on a black screen (it helped me to leave the camera on and close the camera app on the panel. Sometimes it helps).
Another experience is that after installing the app, the app icons are not added to the menu – you have to restart the phone.
I also noticed that the control panel is missing, for example, the number of received SMS messages.
I had a problem getting the Dekko2 app to work after adding an IMAP account; it wouldn't load emails (mysteriously, it worked, but I have no idea how).
Despite all the minor issues, thank you all for your work on this system.Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Thanks for the information! We are currently working on a new port. I am not sure if we will have the same issues or not, but we'd like to document any issues so we can hopefully address them when the port is finished. Also, we are curious about people's general experience using Ubuntu Touch on the Google Pixel 3a/3aXL. Again, thanks for sharing!

@atarilinux With the exception of VoLTE, the P3a with the current 20.04 port is the finest example of what UT on a phone can be. I wish you the best of success with your updated port. Join us in the NA Issues UT Telegram group, and you'll have testers waiting to help when the time comes.

@OtaDr in regards to the new app icons not showing up in the launcher, refresh the drawer by pulling down inside of the drawer, see if that works. When I was using the way droid helper to add Android apps to the Ubuntu touch app drawer, I had to refresh the drawer every single time.

Hi there nice to meet you, I am interested in this project as I want to move away from the mainstream options. Although I am not versed in the world of programming (once upon a time I was heavily into mIRC scripting), I don't mind testing features out. I understand that this is a work in progress.
I use the Pixel 3A XL (bonito). I will list issues down below, but am unsure if they are device specific or Ubuntu Touch as a whole.
-
camera: works once, then a still image of the picture I just took remains. If I flip flop through apps and come back to camera, The viewfinder shows what the camera is looking at, but when taking a picture, the blue spinning circle appears and never goes away (the picture is never taken at this point)
-
scrolling: I feel that there is a hard limit set for scrolling, as it does not scroll through pages quick enough and is sluggish. For example, when on a web page using morph browser, if I want to scroll down, I have to do it slowly so that it actually scrolls down. Regardless of how slow or fast I go, it appears to be "Skippy". Now, if I scroll really fast (or even slightly faster than normal I guess you can say), It's almost like the scrolling motion turns into a bounce, where it will scroll down a few lines/segments, then start scrolling back upwards. This behavior is throughout the whole operating system and is not related to the browser itself I find. I can provide a video here if interested to see the behaviour I am describing.
-
MMS: this is a known issue but I'm bringing it up because I'm wondering if it is something that will be worked on?
-
Waydroid: it would be nice if the app switcher would show a thumbnail for each waydroid application being ran. A thumbnail only shows for the last running/opened Waydroid app, while the other Waydroid apps have no thumbnail and are transparent.

Wifi bug: I don't know how this happened but here was the setup leading up to it right from the first boot: device turned on, connected to my Wi-Fi, saw that there was a hotspot option so I set that up too but never used it/turned it on, installed some apps from the store, installed waydroid, was using some Android apps here and there, I guess I ended up rebooting due to something unrelated at some point but when the phone turned back on, it asked me to reconnect to my network. It added a one at the end of the SSID. I noticed that there were two Wi-Fi signals. They had separate strength indicators from one another although they were marginally close in terms of the appearance. I tried to remove previous networks and I noticed that there were two of the same SSID, along with a new "ssid 1". When I removed the other networks but kept the one that was working, the other Wi-Fi icon would disappear. Even though it showed that I had removed these networks, upon rebooting, they would show up again in all of a sudden I would have two Wi-Fi indicator icons up in the top bar.
The side effect of this, is that I can no longer ping my laptop, but could ping everything else on my network. My laptop also could not see the phone and I could not SSH back into it. I was only able to SSH into it one time before this problem happened. I ended up doing a system reset to start over.
These are just a few things I can think of right now. I have only had the device for 2 days, and had spent an entire day with Ubuntu touch yesterday, but I do plan on using it back and forth with my S24 for some real testing.
I've been reading some posts in the forum here, I don't exactly have the setup to set up a dev environment (saw a recommendation of 24gb RAM, I'm kneecapped at 8gb lol!), but I would like to test any new builds or features that may be coming or have been improved upon. So if there's other things that you might want to get me to try, I'm all for it. I run pop OS on my laptop.

Just answer for that one. What kind of issue for MMS ?. It is not device specific issue afaik. And it is working for me. Probably an issue with your APN config
-
@lduboeuf I can't seem to send or receive any MMS, specifically images (as as the only thing I have tested with).
The APN settings seem to be correct.

isn't the wifi on issue ? ( e.g Wifi must be off to send/receive MMS for me , only cellular data On)
-
@lduboeuf ahhh I did not know this. I guess I was expecting that the OS knows when to send an MMS using the modem only. It worked after disconnecting from Wifi.

It is something not easy to tackle despite it seems easy :). There has been an attempt to add an info popup about that at least, but it failed due for some reason. I will try to rework on it soon at least to have users informed

@lduboeuf hey no worries, people work on this on their free time and I value and respect that. I'm happy something like this exists.
