Add "Tab" key to Ubuntu Touch keyboard?
-
Hello UT comrades,
I use Linux for my daily computer and it is so nice when in terminal to press "Tab" to complete filenames, directory names, etc (vs typing out name completely OR misspelling by 1 char). It would be even more amazing when in terminal on Ubuntu Touch phone.Does anyone know of a way to modify one of the keys on my Ubuntu Touch keyboard to become "Tab"?
This would be amazing. Thanks for any thoughts and suggestions.
Cheers, Leroy

I don't know of a way. I think (may be wrong) that the key mapping in the settings is only useful for people using a real keyboard. Note that the virtual keyboard is not exactly one of the better maintained parts of Ubuntu Touch, so although your suggestion is interesting I don't expect it to be implemented real soon now.
This said, you can use Tab right now even if it may be too convoluted for your taste: use the hamburger menu to the left just above the keyboard, select 'Scr' (that's in the english version you may have to find the equivalent if you use another language), then the top part turns into something else beginning by 'pg_up_key', slide this part to the left and you will find an item marked 'tab_key' that does what you want.
I have used it myself a few times, although when I'm home connecting via ssh gives me all the amenities of a real keyboard, cut & paste with my main computer so for me it's a far more convenient fix for this problem.

@gpatel-fr This is fantastic man! I didn't know about the hamburger option then Scr. thank you! Thank You! THANK YOU!!
This is doing exactly what I want it to do. (I just have to go to hamburger each time I open terminal, but at least there is this option). Great idea too on setting up ssh and can connect to phone from actual computer and type with ease on full size keyboard. Thanks again! -
@Leroy_Linux There even is another way of tabbing in the Ubuntu Touch terminal app. You can tap anywhere on the terminal area to mimick the behavior of the tab key and use auto-completion.

As far as I remember, there's a tab key ready in the keyboard's code. Just need to add an actual key or buttons somewhere.
In any case, as already mentioned, a single tap anywhere in the terminal area acts as tab. You can also swipe with one finger to simulate arrow keys. Or use the keyboard's own cursor mover which also simulates the arrow keys.
2 finger swipe to scroll.
