@oya-g
Hello.
Ubuntu Touch is an open source, community based project.
Translations are for the major part done by community members.
Feel free to join the task force and add language you need. -
@Keneda
Thanks for the reply.Thank you very match,I installed ubuntu touch 2 days ago, but there is no Japanese in the default Display language.
I think it will take about 10 years for me to join and add the language.
Will there be any Japanese language added to the display language even if I wait for a while? -

I don't know that so I can't answer.
There need to be someone using Ubuntu Touch, Japanese or fluent in Japanese language, to get this work done.
There is no translation without people needing the language to translate to, and doing the job.Although I find it weird there is not already Japanese in languages setting.

@oya-g
Well, I just checked and there seems to be Japanese already for Ubuntu Touch.
Both display and keyboard.
Setting for display language, last choice in the list :

Thanks for doing all the research.
However, the image looks like 16.04LTS. I installed 20.04LTS on my pixel3a. It seems that Japanese and Hong Kong Chinese are gone.
The only way seems to be to ask a skilled Japanese person to do it.Thanks for spending your precious time!

@oya-g
It is indeed from my 16.04 Nexus 5.
However, i believe it's an "issue" to report as most of the translation from 16.04 must be the same for 20.04, most part of the UI should be translated.Maybe open an issue on gitlab for this if not already done.
@Lakotaubp is there a reason for japanese not included in 20.04 (and Hong Kong chinese) ?

@Keneda https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/lomiri/-/ja/ it is under way but needs 70% to show up and is just under that now. So if anyone wants to help use the link above. You do not need to be an expert to help.
-
@keneda
You are right. Because ubuntu is a free way to connect regardless of politics, religion and language.
Thanks for everything!@Lakotaubp
Nice to meet you.
I checked the link. I am not an expert, but I think I can do something. However, tomorrow is Monday. It is 23:10 in Japan. I work outdoors, so sleep is important. I will check carefully tomorrow night.
Thanks for your message! -

Overall, 72% has been reached.0% of components have been eliminated. Now please add Japanese to the language settings.
-
@oya-g not sure what is involved in adding a newly qualifying language. But even if it is an automatic process, it will probably only be included at the earliest in OTA-6.
-
@arubislander
Thanks for writing in.
I understand.
However, the translation is interesting.Japanese characters are a little more difficult to write, since it is necessary to use three different types of characters (kanji hiragana katakana).
If it is to be used by Japanese, it will need to be translated by Japanese. Well, we will increase the number of translations while enjoying it patiently.
Thanks for letting me know!! -

Yes, I'm also missing the japanese support: AFAIR the 16.04 version of ubports does still have mostly complete japanese support. Including a very nice japanese input method.
Unfortunately with 20.04 the japanese input keyboard is broken (see this post) and the japanese translation not available any more.
Also, if you ever plan to use your Ubports phone in japan: note that sometime around March 2024 Japanese mobile providers completely shut down any 3G support. So while you may still be able to get online using a UBports phone with 4G/LTE, you will not be able to make any phone-calls as that requires 4G VoLTE support, which AFAIK is not yet supported on UBports.

I just installed the "devel" channel firmware of UBports 20.04 on a Volla Phone 22, and it now does offer japanese language localization ("日本語") in the initial configuration wizard (that shows at first boot, as I had the phone fully wiped during installation). What a pleasant surprise!
The firmware version is shown as 20.04 r766. (build date appears to be yesterday).
edit: but the japanese keyboard is still broken. Note that it is only broken "visually". If you still remember how the keyboard worked in UBports 16.04, you can just use it typing "blindly".

@Dave
Thanks for the Dave info!
Channel Update → 20.04Development has Japanese. My device is Pixel3a, so it is 4G compatible.
I will look for a cheap telecommunications company -

The "development" channel is maybe not meant for day-to-day use, as it may be buggy and/or unstable. So really looking forward to japanese support arriving in stable.
Note that even with a 4G compatible phone, you will not be able to do any phone calls inside japan, as the 4G protocol stack does not by itself support telephony. It only supports data.
For telephony, you need VoLTE support, which is quite a messy affair, as it requires various firmware and software components to cooperate properly for calls to be routed over the 4G data layer (i.e. as VoIP call). UBports does not support that currently.
