Data still not working after months of works, I go to e/os
-
My FP4 was running Android 11 FP4 edition from the previous owner, everything working including data. I have installed ubports 20.04 OTA 5 with UBports-installer on mac. French carrier Free with unlimited 3G/4G/5G access. Very happy, Everything works, except data . After hours on Ubuntu/Ubports/Fairphone-forums, several days to try everything, I have tried all network configurations possible (and rebooted hundred times), here are the symptoms: data first work during 20 to 40 seconds, data at full speed, with " L" sign on the screen in the Network menu, then Data stops completely, and sign is 3G. After one month of tries, I came back to Android 11, verified that data is working, yes, so it is not a hardware pb or a carrier pb, then, I reinstalled the new ubports 20.04 OTA 6. Same symptoms, data not working after few seconds. I am now fed up, and have decided to go to e/os/ with sadness.

But I don't see you asking questions here on the forum.

@Moem
You know, we French people like to complain just for the sake of complainingLet's just say it's to inform people that would consider the FP4 in France.
In my opinion, this is an issue with the provider, because FP4 is fairly stable in other countries from what I can witness here on the forum.
Also, the fact that it works for a while until not might be an indication of some shady check made by Free...
But then it's hard to pinpoint an exact issue with just this statement. So if other owners of the FP4 can share their experience it would be good French or not and with various service providers.

@AppLee FP4 and French. I didn't had any connectivity issues since 1y+ but I am not with Free but with RED (SFR).

In my FP4 I have two apn setup one for just the mobile data and one for mms/message. Works for me if in one setting it can break.

humm i think i've already heard something similar somewhere and it was because on previous Android IMS was enabled. I don't lnow well how to tackle this, but either by toggled it off when on Android or via the provider's web site.

Hello all

Exact, but I have been on all posts related to "data not working" and other keywords on ubuntu/fairphone/ubports forums. There are nice people everywhere. I always try to manage by myself before asking the community. I have tried dozens and dozens "receipes" to fix the issue, without success. I would really like to stay with ubports, wich is the most friendly OS for me, but I need data working. I have not tried yet to install another Sim in my FP4 to see if it is a provider issue.

I am ready to reinstall ubports for the third time if a solution is found. Do you suggest that I come back to android 11 and try to disable it ? I hope I can go back to android 11, because the installer of E/os asked to be on A13 for a story of certificates, and I had to do it, I am now on A13 since yesterday night, data is working, but i did not succeeded to install e/os with their installer and their brand new last version, because of some security certificates not up to date, from their side I think. ( their servers were also down during the last days, wich is not serious)
I would like to know if there is a french user here with the french provider Free and an FP4 on 20.04 with data working. I also suspect this is an issue with the provider, because data works for the first 30-40 seconds, with very high speed, and the symptom looks like if I get kicked out after this period, when the logo goes from"L" to "3G". I would like also to precise that Data was working until nov-dec 2023, and It suddenly ceased to work. The Free provider always change some things.
I have called the Free support team, to ask if somethin has changed in 2023, but, as expected, they were unable to answer to my questions nore find a solution.I have questions to the community: -shall I install a previous version of ubports (16. ?) to see if the issue is there ?
-is there a log of the network connections in 20.04 to see if there is a message from the provider, or any interesting info about the connection ?
-is it possible to modify the UBports Network settings on the configuration file itself, and not on the GUI ? if yes, what is the path of the "network settings" document ?I do not deseperate that the situation changes if it's a provider issue. I wait for your eventual answers before trying (to install...) another OS.
Cheers, JN -
Hi @jnm
I would reinstall Android11 deactivate IMS and reinstall Ubuntu Touch as suggested by Lionel.
Also with dual SIM devices you should try to switch SIM slot if you can.
And if you have a friend willing to switch SIM with you to test things out it would be great.
This way you can try 1 SIM in slot1, 1 sim in slot2, 2 SIMs and various settings MMS on one SIM, Internet on the other, separate configurations or 2in1, ...-shall I install a previous version of ubports (16. ?) to see if the issue is there ?
I do not recommend doing so, Xenial is not supported anymore and I doubt it has anything to do with your issue.
-is there a log of the network connections in 20.04 to see if there is a message from the provider, or any interesting info about the connection ?
The easiest way is to use the LogViewer app.
-is it possible to modify the UBports Network settings on the configuration file itself, and not on the GUI ? if yes, what is the path of the "network settings" document ?
I don't know, but I won't recommend it either.
It's not really a "network" setting, but a modem configuration and that's different from what you might be familiar with.Good luck with your testing.

Hi @AppLee
thank you for your comments
After some troubles returning to A11, I am back to A11I would like to deactivate IMS, as you suggest, but the only menu in the settings/dev settings is "IMS settings display" subtitled "debug mode when IMS enable". Didn't find something on the web about it on A11. any advice ?
