Bought OnePlus Nord N10 5G but got OnePlusN10METRO ? Will this work ?

Hi,

I've been itching to try ubuntu touch for a long time and earlier this year I had a look at the supported devices and for the price the OnePlus Nord N10 5G seemed like a good candidate.

So I received two of them today and unfortunately I get this message in the installer

Device not supported
The device OnePlusN10METRO is not supported.

So first question, is that correct ?

I see there is the option to try anyway, but I also don't want to brick this phone so ... advice ?

Is it correct that the installer identifies your device as a OnePlus N10 METRO? Probably.

Is it correct that the OnePlus N10 METRO is not supported? Absolutely!

If you try anyway you will quite probably brick your device.

My advice would be to return the device and get a refund.

Too late to get a refund, it sat in a warehouse too long and the window for it is passed.

Even the about page says N10 5G

Is there any way to check if it's not just misidentified ?

@shodan It looks like you have the T-Mobile METRO version of the OP N10 5G.

Get the device SIM unlocked from T-Mobile (you will have probably buy a T-Mobile METRO SIM, put some credit on it and make a call to allow you to unlock) if you can, i.e. research to see if T-Mobile will allow you to SIM Unlock and what the process is.

Once SIM unlocked, you should then flash the ROM indicated in the devices page on UT using the MSM download tool bundled with it, and the device must be in EDL mode.

Then unlock the bootloader.

Then install UT.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET THE SIM (NETWORK) UNLOCK FIRST BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANYTHING ELSE.

If you are not sure, have not done this before I would follow @arubislander advice and not attempt it as you may end up with a bricked device. Even if you can get it SIM unlocked and you are not sure, sell the device on and get a global SIM free device.

This is a useful resoursce : linky - but I would strongly advise NOT following the first post on the thread.

As a disclaimer, if you decide to try as in nothing gained, nothing lost, I cannot be held responsible for you bricking the device or data loss.
My advice overall would be to sell the device on as you cannot return it and get a network unlocked version of the N10 5G, or N100, or Pixel 3a/3aXL, OnePlus 5/5T or Oneplus 6/6T. As of this moment 4G VolTe and 5G are not supported on Ubuntu Touch for various reasons, but thanks to a monumental effort by developers, it is coming, but only on certain devices.

Welcome to the community!
I wouldn't give up on the phones you got just yet. After a quick bit of searching, I can't find any such phone as a Oneplus N10 Metro. I don't know much about these things, but could the device be locked to a cell carrier called Metro, and maybe that's coming up in the installer? In searching for a Oneplus N10 Metro, I noticed there's a cell company in the USA called Metro that seems to supply Oneplus N10. Sometimes a device is locked to a carrier, but often it is possible to unlock it. May be worth searching online for how to unlock the phone from Metro? But again, I'm really not sure this is the case.

Also, I see that you have Android 11 installed. In the device page for the OP N10, if you scroll down a ways, it states that you'll need to be using a specific version, Oxygen 10.5.7 or something. The system image or whatever you call it is conveniently linked from the device page. You'll need to download that file and install that version of android before installing Ubuntu Touch.

The other main thing you'll need to do , probably before downgrading, is unlock the bootloader. Search online for how. Takes a bit of doing, but it's all doable.

Hope it turns out that your devices are what you thought they were, and useable for UT!

@shodan touch says it wants 10.5.7 and the metro version is 10.5.8 firmware will it work I am not sure I accidentally tried on android 11 it got stuck and had to use msm tool to get it back to stock firmware 10.5.8. I haven't had enough guts to try again after I accidentally tried to flash on 11 got stuck and had to reflash to the 10.5.8 the phone has the same internal hardware as there tmobile version but tmobile version does let you go to 10.5.7 if I tray to flash the firmware from tmobile version not there metro by t mobile version says device isn't compatible which is not true its got the same hardware as the tmobile version I belive If I was to guess metro put something in there firmware to where you had to keep 10.5.8 which really sucks I bought this phone cause the support site says on here works flawless on the n10 but not metro n10 at least its been a total crap shoot my friend! BUT! if you find a way please let me know to bad there wasn't a link on here to a modded firmware that would make the metor variant take 10.5.7 there was someone did make one on the xda forum site and when I went to click the download file it was there bad link maybe it will come back sometime any ways have a good one! BTW if you hadnt yet yes you can unlock the bootloader on this its a pain you have to escallate it with a oneplus supervisor though they dont like the metro variant but they will give it to you if ya talk to a supervisor anyways again let me know what you find and ill keep you posted as well. Here is the link to what I was finding hope it helps and please return any links to me as well! Heres a couple links I was looking into maybe you can find that file or can figure out how to do what they dad and make us one LOL!

@jam1388 It requires the Android version stipulated in the devices page in order for it to work. It will not work otherwise and may end up with a boot looping Device.

@Moem Sure are gps camera so I guess i take it back I have no idea why it said one plus was not compatible with 10.5.8 on the requirements it went very smoothly the only reason I attempted it was cause it was still Billie just 1 number off I was like is that really that big of an issuse and my chances wore off still would of like to have a 10.5.7 but heck touch installed so this other guy in this forum for his @shodan flash from his 11 to 10.5.8 unlock bootloader and go ahead un run ubports installer and select device manually and it will go just dont unplug the usb cable in process LOL @shodan if your bootloader isnt unlock dont ask metro go to oneplus if ya need a link let me know but yes you can unlock the bootloader your gonna have to give em hell and ask supervisor

update on this I did get it to work but the cell side doesnt seem to be wanting to log on to carrier getting denied after sim card put in

@jam1388 @Moem and @shodan i just want to update cell does work haven't seen anything yet that doesn't the problem i had wasn't build issue of phone at all my cell carrier said it transferred my sim card it didn't that why it want showing service so I called them the transfered same sim to imie wallah to cool to have touch on the n 10 metro

This will be my last post so the phone most from what I did see I cant call out get called failed but I do hae mobile data and sms go figure but nobody can call me and I cant call out if anyone know how to get voice over lte going that be great to know because the toggle switch is greyed out for it but I get lte so nothing makes since its almost there like I said if anyone has any ideas please let me know!

@jam1388 If you are in the USA, you need 4G VolTe which is coming to some devices on UT, but has been a challenge to do so has taken a long time. You may also find that using a ROM not stipulated by the porter may cause issues like no wifi, data and the like so it is always wise to use the ROM the porter has used. Likewise if the device is SIM locked, you will have to revert to Android to get it unlocked if the carrier allows. It rarely works SIM unlocking on UT or even a custom Android ROM.

@MrT10001 I have the phone bootloader unlocked of course I can use a sim with any carrier as its unlocked there just wish there was a way to get 4g data and make phone calls out withought haveing to go into settings and switching from the 4g speed to 2g 3g to make and recive calls if I dont well i dont get calls in or out otherwise I switch to 4g and back and forth is a pain I cant make or take calls but i get highspeed data and i do get texting....... I hope this makes sense it was also the 10.5.8 metro pcs phone the forum says 10.5.7 I did it anyways it works and pretty much flawless except that issue im not sure if 10.5.8 is the issue or not if someone knows id love to hear it lol its a great project this touch wish I was more capable to help with code.

This is an open source project based on volunteer work.
We cannot have 3 or 5 year plan, it will depend on people's skills and motivation in order to achieve this goal.

VoLTE is still a priority, but basically there is so few people able to understand and work on this.
We're doing our best with limited resources.
Everyone is doing their best to support the community's efforts.

@AppLee Thats cool patients for good stuff is virtue I guess I can still make calls as long as I switch from 4g to 2g if I'm not wanting data wish there was some app that could just stop the data side till your off the phone and switch back over that would be cool maybe someone can fix up an up that can do that instead of going into menu to change it back and forth other then that works great on a metro phone to boot that didn't have 10.5.7 it still installed don't know how it was android 10.5.8 and no firmware to flash it down but not complaining its pretty cool
