I'm not sure if such question was already discussed, most likely it was but I'm bad at searching. I'm not sure which category it best fits so posting here.

I know that many other mobile OSes started offering swipe gestures, but I hate them. It's very uncomfortable to do when you're holding the phone in your hand. I really love 3 simple buttons at the bottom of the phone. Could we have them in ubuntu touch?

        • left button: does the same as swipe from left
        • right button does the same as swipe from right
        • middle button (if present): minimize all apps showing the wallpaper (or perhaps it's called background in ubuntu)

I know that ubuntu touch is not for everyone. Maybe I'm in the minority who doesn't like it, but everyone else is ok with the lack of simple navigation buttons. I'm curious to be honest, but with the current experience I'll perhaps resarch options to move to kde plasma.

I have to wonder why you would install a strongly swipe-oriented OS if you don't like swipe-oriented interfaces. The part that you dislike is very strongly integrated with the OS.

May I ask you what you do like about UT?

          Is currently using an Op5t
Also owns an Op1, a BQ E4.5 and an Xperia X, as well as a BQ tablet and a Pinetab2. Please, someone... make it stop.

@Moem I always wanted Linux OS on the phone. Fairphone 4 satisfied all my wishes in terms of hardware features and quality, so I'm really happy being able to put a Linux on it.

I can't find other Linux firmware with complete support for FP4, so I guess UTouch is my starting point. I'm not sure what I will achieve, hopefully it's not that hard to switch the UI layer(?). However, honestly, just the two swype actions are used in this OS, so running them via simple bottom buttons would be a minimal but suitable change.

Maybe the left swipe and right swipe could be mapped to volume up and down physical buttons?

@fair Glad you found UT! But my two cents is that it's very unlikely to see a change on this. The whole OS is maintained by a small core of developers, and I can't imagine this being a priority any time soon. And I'm pretty sure Lomiri is the only desktop environment for UT. It's different than other forms of Ubuntu.
If it's indeed as easy a chage as you say, perhaps it's a case for some personal tinkering? If you succeed, post your results!
But a lot of us really like the swipes and it's pretty central to how the OS has worked for a long time. Who knows, maybe you'll come to like them 🙂

Yeah, this will never happen. UT/Lomiri was designed with swipe gestures right from the start. It's probably trivial to add it to be honest if you're just asking for functions that already exists, except the "home" like button. I guess there's a small chance it may happen if someone does it and proposes it. If you know QML, you can do this directly on your device. I will never want this but I kinda tempted to try it out anyway 😆
