        Hi,

The time has come. According to a text message from my mobile phone provider Swisscom, the 2G and 3G networks will be โ€œshut downโ€ starting tomorrow, February 3, 2026.

Except for the mobile phone provider โ€œsalt,โ€ witch no decision has been made yet.

This means that my Oneplus Nord N100 (BE2013) will no longer be able to make phone calls, hopefully only temporarily until it supports VoLTE.

Until then, I will probably have to switch to E-OS and Samsung Galaxy S9.

        Greetings from switzerland

I thought the Oneplus Nord N100 already had VoLTE support though?

@Lumpology the N10 5G has volte support. Since the N100 is the same port, I would have expected that to have support as well.

@mario.ch, have you tried it recently with 24.04.1/stable?

I think you actually want the 24.04.1x daily channel. My N10 5G only has volte on daily, not stable or rc.

                  Well but Hello, everyone! ๐Ÿ˜

Thank you very much for your information. ๐Ÿ’•

I've been around long enough to know that a daily channel (i.e., dragon channel) exists in the versions, but I don't want it on my daily driver.
I can wait for the RC or stable channel, even though my attempt on the Samsung Galaxy S9 with E-OS failed.
I found the following post in the E-OS forum:

These international Samsungs donโ€™t get VoLTE with any U.S. network, due to:

their internal hardware which is different from North America Samsungs and identifies as incompatible, i.e. non-certified for a particular U.S. networkโ€™s VoLTE; their exact model number + suffix is also different from the North American variant.

Samsungโ€™s proprietary IMS/VoLTE implementation which no custom ROM can integrate (or so Iโ€™ve read).

Even U.S. variants of Samsung apparently canโ€™t get VoLTE once a custom ROM is installed (unless something changes). Other OEMs donโ€™t have this problem.

Any carrier can tell if a phone has or has not been certified by the OEM specifically to carry Voice over LTE on their network, just by the IMEI, which is visible to their systems; if not, then they will disallow it in countries like the U.S., where VoLTE is now a hard requirement. It would probably introduce a legal liability (inability to call emergency services) to them if they allowed a non-compatible phone on the network once all the 3G is shut down, and eventually 2G.

If a particular device has been tested and certified to use a particular networkโ€™s VoLTE, then a setting such as โ€œEnable voice over LTEโ€ or โ€œEnable 4G callingโ€ or โ€œUse VoLTE,โ€ etc., will appear in the menu when that networkโ€™s SIM is inserted. (Not to be confused with LTE data, which is not specifically referring to making phone calls.) ๐Ÿค”

                  Greetings
                  Mario

                    Hi everyone,

After further research on the internet, I came across IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) and was surprised to discover that VoLTE and RCS (Rich Communication Services)
are both somehow related to IMS. ๐Ÿค“

And that the telephone service provider in Switzerland "Swisscom" had already discontinued the RCS service at the end of 2023 because it was hardly being used. ๐Ÿ˜’

                    Greetings ๐Ÿ˜‰

@Mario.CH Hi Mario. As you know, I'm also in Switzerland (but the french speaking part ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

This is not a discussion about operators, their prices or services... However, to my knowledge, my carrier (Salt.) has announced that it intends to continue operating 3G frequencies until at least the end of 2026 (see this blog in French below).

                        hi @stanwood,

Well, I'm always glad that forum readers take the time to read the posts before replying. ๐Ÿ™

Since I started the thread myself and specifically labeled it โ€œoff topic,โ€ I would like to mention that even the best cell phones and their customized software would be useless without telephone service providers. ๐Ÿ˜‰

                        Greetings
