How to setup crossbuilder in Ubuntu 18.10?

For system development I want to use crossbuilder as suggested. Unfortunately I can't set up crossbuilder on a VM with Ubuntu 18.10:

crossbuilder setup-lxd
LXD was installed but is not accessible. Please restart your computer.

Edit: A second trial on a fresh installed system failed either:

LXD requires subuid to be setup adequately to mount directories in containers.
Would you like to do that now? (y/n) 
Y

Failed to restart lxd.service: Unit lxd.service not found.

I think I have to use Ubuntu 18.04 for crowwbuilder.
