file manager authentication
-
Do other users have this issue?
I've just updated to devel 469 and still no authentication dialogue.
I also tried clearing the cache with UTTT and re-booting, but that made no difference.
The file manager seems to have un-fettered access to all files and folders now without needing to authenticate.
Is this how things are meant to be now?
Please can someone reply and let me know how their file manager behaves.
Maybe I need to switch back to OTA 11 stable? -
@dtarrant Not sure what you mean. I've never noticed any authentication dialogue in File Manager. At least I can't remember having seen anything like that. It just opens to the Home folder and you can click on a little dot and dash type symbol at top right of screen to get a pop-up widow with option to see hidden files and other stuff. Same on E4.5 (rc), Sony X (...fredldotme/devel) , both up to date.

Hi @dtarrant
My M10 is on the rc channel. The file manager is unlocked by default.
My Pro 5 is on devel. The file manager there is locked by default initially. -
@arubislander Thanks for your reply. OpenStore File Manager screenshot 1 shows the green authentication dialogue that I'm referring to. I'm used to it always showing when I start FM.
In the case FM opens unlocked, how can you then lock it to reduce the risk of scewing something up? -
@ziggutas Thanks for your reply. Please see my previous post regarding OpenStore for a better explanation.
-
@dtarrant I don't think there is a way to re-lock the file manager once it is unlocked. And since it is unlocked by default for some reason on certain builds I don't think there is anything user facing that can be done about it.
-
I think someone should file a bug as this is definitely a regression and it only happens on certain devices.
It seems to affect the terminal and file manager. -

Ahh, see what you mean. Seems like a sensible feature, but it would need the same on Terminal as well I guess. Never seen any of this on (currently) 4 devices.
-
@ziggutas Aha, hadn't noticed authentication had disappeared from Terminal app until now.
Just re-read the OpenStore entries for Terminal and FM and they both now state "Full System Access" at the bottom!
So there you have it!
Thanks to everyone who contributed. -
@kugiigi Seems it's intentional and not a bug. See my previous post for explanation.
-
'Full System Access' as a 'permission' does not mean that no authentication needs to be asked for elevated priveleges.
-
@arubislander I see. Well I must say I was very comfortable with being asked for authentication for elevated priveleges. I wonder what the intention is for the future?
-
@dtarrant
there's a Q&A tomorrow... -
@3arn0wl Good point. I've filed a question. Thank you for the suggestion.
-
It is a bug.
-
@dobey Thanks for clearing that one up!

@dtarrant I noticed the same on my phone:
(0) Both file manager and terminal grant full access without asking for a password. Some update must have brought this (last time I am sure it worked was in December). I suppose this is a bug, maybe in another component. Here's what I observed:
(1) I used to have no system password / PIN on this phone, just the default, and both apps would ask to be unlocked. Now that I suddenly have full access without being asked,
(2) I set my own PIN and locked the screen. After unlocking, both apps work as expected, asking me to unlock. (Just setting a PIN without locking the screen had no effect on the apps. Of course, I closed each app before the next try.)
(3) Even after removing the PIN again (but not lock/unlock), they still keep asking and grant access upon entering the default PIN.
(4) after screen lock/unlock with a swipe, I am back to (0).
So I guess the bug is not in these two apps, but on a more basic level. The modus of file manager and terminal seems to depend on whether the screen has been unlocked with a PIN or a swipe before. Did others observe the same? -

Yes. It is a bug resulting from the new Mir/Unity8 builds. Though I am not sure where exactly the issue is.

@dobey UT Tweak Tool is not affected, it still asks me for the default PIN
