I have two portable devices that when plugged in to my Ubuntu destop are immediatly recogised. One is an ereader and the other a cell running KaiOS.
It makes me wonder that my PineTab running UBPorts is not.
        Any ideas why?

@Yuri From what I understand PinePhone and PineTab have (more or less) the same software, see: https://gitlab.com/ubports/community-ports/pinephone , and USB doesn't work yet. Both devices are still experimental.

@Alter Thanks. I am among those early adopters who received the first PineTab shipment and was anticipating more bugs than I've had so far.

@Yuri to transfer files you can use the WifiTransfer app from the OpenStore. You can also set up SSH.

MTP is an Android thing so it's not automatically available on the Pinephone and Pinetab. I think they do plan to have to though. For now you can use WifiTranser or SSH/SFTP (which I much prefer than wired connection).
