Given that the current "promoted/supported devices" are now all discontinued and at least 4 years old (with the Nexus 5 now 7 years old) - doesn't it make sense to change both the website as well as support priorities to a new set of "promoted devices"? Seems to me Volla Phone, PinePhone, OnePlus 3/3T, Sony Xperia X series, PineTab, perhaps Google Pixel 3A, and whatever Xiaomi/Redmi device is looking to be easiest to fully support, would all make sense to change the focuses to as far as what is "promoted"- with the understanding that some devices (e.g. PinePhone, PineTab) need a bit more development before placing into this category.

          Best regards,
          Steve Berson

Hi everyone and thanks for the show, it's always a pleasure to watch it.

In addition to @TotalSonic 's question, I'd like to know what are the criteria and purpose of the different categories of devices.
I believe naming things is very important and defining the different categories is key to guide new users.

I know of "promoted" or "supported" devices (not sure there is a difference).
And the website lists other devices as "other", but there are the one supported (sic) by the installer and the rest that I would describe as "port in progress"...

Could you clarify what devices' categories are ?
I know about the work in progress toward a feature matrix and maybe this could help.

            Thanks yall

Edit: What about Halium ports, GSI ports, Legacy ports, ...

              Hi,

About the new Halium 7.1 port for Nexus 5, FP2, etc..., that has been started 1 year ago:

There are a few Q&A's ago, Florian explained that this new port was almost complete. He was thinking about the most appropriate broadcast channel to push it (OTA-stable, OTA-Halium, other, etc...).
Do you have any news on this subject? Can we hope it will still be available this year?

Thanks again for your great work! Best regards.

              Redmi Note 9S Stable

                Quick question from space:
How can we get more people on board to work on Mioil?

                Love the show

With the recent news that Pine64 is setting up commercial distributors:
                  https://www.pine64.org/2020/12/02/pine-store-community-pricing-online-retail-stores/

Have you thought about partnering up with some distributors for UT support? Might be possible to fund some PinePhone specific development that way.

                    Hi ubports team!

I have almost the same question than totalsonic, how does it work with the supported devices? Last month my old phone broke and I choose in the "ubuntu devices" list a recent phone, 2nd hand Xiaomi Redmi 7 ( unofficial port ), cause the other phone higer in the list Oneplus one Bacon doesn't have 4g. Others phones with nice maturity was quiet old and i buy a phone every 5 years roughly so i choose somethings for long time. I think i read than the problem is not to have more devices supported but you are working on a solution more "universal". Maybe it can be nice to have more recents phone to have more users, of course there is Volla, pinephone ect but some people doens't want to spend 500€ in a phone.
Thanks a lot for all your works! I'm so happy with this OS!

Sorry for my english, it's hard to balance what I want to explain between a 7 years old phone and a other at 500...

I have tested the 5.9 kernel on Pine64. I was surprised how well some things work.
This kernel should be skipped to go straight to the 5.10 kernel.
My question, does the 5.10 make things easier during development ?
I am always afraid that with completely new things (software) completely unexpected things will happen. (calls in German: Kinderkrankheiten)
I watch your show again and again with enthusiasm.

I was wanting to refer someone to Lomiri and found only the unity8.io website. Are there plans for a lomiri.io?

                          A placeholder is at lomiri.com.

If no one currently has enough free time to develop a fresh page for Lomiri, seems to me that the page currently at unity8.io could be reused (with a global replace of "Unity8" to "Lomiri" and a 301 redirect from unity8.io to lomiri.com) until someone finds the time to develop a fresh page.

EDIT: I think the more pressing issue is that, at least when I last tried to install Lomiri on an x86-64 device (which was a long time ago, so please forgive me if things have changed), I wasn't able to install onto an x86-64 device running Ubuntu 20.04.

QUESTION for Q&A: When will we be able to install (for testing/preview purposes) Lomiri onto an x86-64 device running Ubuntu 20.04?

To be clear, I am NOT asking when Lomiri will be usable on x86-64 devices running Ubuntu 20.04. Rather, I just want to know when we'll be able to install it, for testing/preview purposes.

Agreed that the focus should move toward newer phones. But I think that your list may be a bit too ambitious for the near term. Sometimes less can be more.

I realize that most won't agree with me on this, but in my opinion, in the near term, UBports should focus on making the upgrades needed for rebasing UT to 20.04 (and also moving to a more recent version of Mir).

Then, once UT has been rebased on 20.04, UBports should focus on (1) the PinePhone, and (2) working the kinks out of the UBports Generic System Image (GSI) project on just a few modern Android devices, with the goal of eventually supporting many more modern Android devices using the GSI approach.

Oh, and Lomiri on x86-64 devices. Don't forget Lomiri on x86-64 devices. πŸ™‚

QUESTION for Q&A: Honest question (and not an attempt to troll), but why is UBports devoting valuable resources to bringing Halium 7.1 to old devices when those resources could, instead, be devoted to working the kinks out of the UBports Generic System Image (GSI) project, which has the potential to, eventually, bring UT to a great many modern Android devices?

I've been PM'd about this, so there are community people interested in getting on board. (I have a dinner date at Q&A time, so can't participate in real time.)

Is it possible to have like a "minimize" option for running apps? Tapping on the icon in the launcher will open the app, tapping a second time will hide the app GUI leaving it running in the background. Think about radio or podcast oriented apps. It will be harder to mess with an app by accident when its interface is not present.

@ohnez The newkernel channel for the PinePhone is using kernel 5.10.

I was wondering, why the logscreen does not rotate any more. It is fixed in rotation which is sometime a bit annoying.

can we expect the A-GPS feature during the next year?

@thebest3000 It didn't. Phones always have lock screen in portrait mode, and tablets/PCs always in the landscape mode, iirc. I'm pretty sure lock screen never rotated.

Yeah, lock screen never rotated but obviously ideally it can rotate especially with the upcoming and current fxtec devices. I think there's an open PR for it but it seems that it became stagnant.
