I have a .ods file in Documents that I would like to create an icon for on the screen. I can access it via Files and Document Viewer, but an icon on screen would be more convenient. Any clues folks?

@cliffcoggin - there is currently no way to do this - you can not add icons, launchers or other widgets to the background. You could create an app to link to a file, and have it launch in the appropriate other app, and then pin that app to the left launcher bar (or just have its icon available in the App Drawer) - but that is probably way more effort than you would want to do for this.

There is talk about enabling app launchers, file links, and widgets that can be placed on the background, or left bar launcher, for future updates of UT - but at this point those things are not a priority relative to things like updating the base to Ubuntu 20.04, debugging already ported devices, improving the UBports installer, or enabling VoLTE - so unless it is something that you wish to tackle as a developer yourself, it is probably a long wait for this.

        Best regards,
        Steve Berson

Thank you. As you rightly guessed, it is not worth spending any time trying to develop a way to do it so I shall continue as I am.

If you know a way to open a file with an app using a terminal command, you can use launcher modular from open store to create a shortcut for it on its app launcher.
