I anticipate changing to a different phone soon and wonder if all I need to do is move the SIM card from one to the other. Can it really be as simple as that? I ask because I am still new to smart phones and have only ever used one.

Specifically, I have a Nexus 5 on stable channel and want to change to an Xperia X Compact.

You only have to move your sim to get your new phone usable with calling, sms and mms yes.
But all your datas from old phone stay on it, you have to export this on new phone and that's not an easy task on UT.

@keneda Thank you. I have a dozen photos on the phone that are already backed up onto a computer. I assume I can do the same for Downloads and Documents, but if I can not it does not matter. The only thing that would be awkward are Contacts, which would be tedious to re-enter manually, but not impossible.

The Contacts App has an Export feature. Open it and choose the file manager. It will give you a backup file that you can save somewhere; I suggest one of the folders that are easily accessible when you hook the phone up to your computer with an USB cable. Documents or Downloads for example.

Copy the backup file to your computer.
Then, hook the new phone up to the computer and copy the file over to that phone.

Now open Contacts on the new phone, find the Import from Vcard feature, browse to the folder where your backup file resides. Your contacts will be imported and Bob's your uncle.

                @cliffcoggin Yes indeed!
Aren't you worried about the incompleteness of the Xperia X Compact, though? It's an inactive port, so it's rather unlikely to improve in the future. From the pretty feature-complete Nexus 5, that might feel like a step backwards.

I have an Xperia X (not Compact) and it has better support, but that too is an inactive port. How future-proof it will turn out to be, I have no idea. Ah well, it was fairly priced.

@moem My mistake. I meant to say Pixel 2 which Florian recently got working. I had Xperia X Compact in mind because it is a similar size.

@cliffcoggin Ah, gotcha! Small-sized devices are few and far between... not that many options if that is what you are after.

These days I am a big fan of just syncing everything via adb onto my PC or Laptop and that works just fine with a lot of phones! 🙂

                      My phones :

                      • BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Phone Edition - Ubuntu Touch 16.04 LTS
                      • ZUK Z2 Pro - ZUI Android 8.x
                      • Xiaomi Mi 9T - Jolla SailFish 3.4.x Community Build

                      P.S. : I am NOT a developer! ;)

I take the entirely opposite view and will synchronise nothing from one device to another. Any specific files I copy from one device to another is done only over a wired connection.

That's exactly what I do via ADB while the phone is connected via USB but some would call it sync stuff! 😉

@nero355 The difference is you mentioned synching everything: I synch only a few files.

I am using a Pixel 2, seems to be OK. The annoyance with any SONY phone is finding one with an unlocked bootloader, or a bootloader you can unlock. You can buy an "unlocked" phone, but all that means is it is not SIM locked. The SONY screens are really nice, but this annoyance with the bootloader has put me off.

I also import the contacts as a vcard file from my google account, saves a lot of messing about. You can do the same if you have an Apple account to import your contacts.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7.... And more...
                                I have too many devices...

I don't get it : Sony phones are THE phones for Jolla Sailfish and if you stick to those models then unlocking the bootloader in order to flash Ubuntu Touch shouldn't be an issue ?!
