What if the root password cannot be changed? help me

Have you tried resetting the operating system, or even re-installing? From past experience on Linux changing the root password can be hit or miss.

I reinstalled it, still the same

When I install UT I set a lock code. This is the sudo/root password when I use terminal. Going back a bit, the root password used to always be "phablet". This is what I did in Ubuntu and it generally worked, but sometimes didn't. This process may work on UT.

@mrt10001 still not

@lxj The other thing is the root file system in UT is read only for security, see here so using sudo may break the system as you have to make it writeable.
Yes, but if I don't have root permission, I can't do anything, but I can't change the root password,,,,,,,

@lxj Question - do you have a root password already?
-
@lxj Sorry if this should be obvious to me but is the problem on the Nexus 5 or your pc/laptop?

In order to help you we need to understand what it is you are trying to do, and your reasoning behind it. Why do you think you need to change the root password?
Just like on regular Ubuntu nowadays, Ubuntu Touch comes with a disabled root account. Root level access can be achieved using sudo in the terminal.
The default (and only) user is phablet. The password for this user is whatever security code you set up for unlocking your phone. -
@lxj
Also the filesystem is readonly for many reasons.
You should try and read the forum to learn more about Ubuntu Touch.
