FluffyChat QML and Pantalaimon development
-
I've been reviewing my old project list and wanted to take a quick pulse of the community. Now that Cinny was ported over and actively developed is there much need or interest in either FluffyChat QML with E2EE via Pantalaimon or otherwise? I'm debating if I should drop these off my list to make way for other interesting Ubuntu Touch related things? Or if there is enough interest for a fork to incorporate fixes and bring in E2EE support along with other features? Do let me know what the mood is around that?

Hello and thank you for the post! I'm running a private matrix server for my family chat and unfortunately Cinny isn't able to handle this (no logon possible). So I'm still on FluffyChat and I hope that you will still support it. Up to now I haven't activated Pantalaimon but a full integration into the app would be fantastic. Please keep up your good work!

@thrrgilag Thanks for stepping up on this.
Since Cinny is relying on web-technologies , FluffyChat is much more performant, at least on my device (FP3).
If some small things would be solved on FluffyChat, I would prefer using it over Cinny.
That things are:- do not display edited messages mutliple times
- make it possible to edit messages
- properly display markdown formatted text
- a proper E2EE solution, since using Pantalaimon tented to drain my battery fast
Also FluffyChat does a better handling of the notifications.
So, yes please, I would like to see some further improvements on FluffyChat.

I also would like to see an updated version of FluffyChat, especially with the following features:
- Support for encryption
- Sharing more than one image at a time
Hope to see a new version soon.

Thanks all for the feedback. I decided to go ahead and move forward with spinning up a fork so that at the very least can continue with bug fixes and ideally start adding the much desired missing features. I've got a new name in mind so not to be confused with the legacy or current FluffyChat project. I'll get the project spun up on gitlab soon. Please do continue with those wish list time of items or if there is an outstanding issue that's been bugging provide me the link so I can review and add it to my early hit list.

On a side note, there is also Hydrogen, a matrix web client developed by Element/New Vector.
It works suprisingly well in Morph Browser with the exception of notifications. It is somewhat bare-bones, but at least it supports E2EE and is in active development. I have been using it as a rudimentary web app created with Webber.
Maybe this could also be a good starting point for a sustainable matrix client on Ubuntu Touch? In any case, thank you for working on this!

I had thought about that before Cinny came into the picture. And that might be an interesting option if someone wanted to tackle it. Ultimately I like the idea of having something more native and really enjoyed using FluffyChat on Ubuntu Touch when it was actively developed. My hope is that creating the fork will give an opportunity for development to continue on it's own path.

I've gone ahead and made the project public on GitLab for anyone who is curious as to where I'm heading with this. https://gitlab.com/thrrgilag/clacks. I've still got some changes to make around branding and need to come up with some artwork, and probably sort out translations. My initial release will be essentially like fluffychat 13.3 with a new name and a few bug fixes included. The big focus will then be on integrated E2EE so the code base will start to diverge a lot.
I'll make a more broader announcement in the near future.

Nice to see development continuing on this. I like FluffyChat because it is much snappier in use than Cinny, Cinny is a resource hog. I've been mostly using Cinny lately though, because there are two bothersome things on FluffyChat, which I would like to see fixed:
- edited messages are shown multiple times, sometimes many many many many times
- there is no possibility to continue reading the messages in a public room from the spot where I stopped last time, in Cinny you can 'Jump to unread messages', another option would be to always restore the previous position.

Hello! Fluffychat is very cool! I'd like to see support for reactions in it. The desktop version shows them but the UT one doesn't. The feature probably wouldn't change anyone's life, but.... it is just to add some more "fluffyness"
