I've got the first cut of a click package if anyone would like to take it for a spin. It's still kinda rough so I'll be doing some more work on it before I publish it to the OpenStore. But if anyone wants to live on the edge and try it out...

      armhf: https://thrrgilag.net/pantalaimon.thrrgilag_0.1.0_armhf.click
      arm64: https://thrrgilag.net/pantalaimon.thrrgilag_0.1.0_arm64.click

source code, issue tracker, and mailing list:

If you find issues, you can toss em to me on the issue tracker, mailing list, via matrix, email, or carrier pidgen.

Yes indeed, which I think makes Pantalaimon a good thing to have as as standalone package regardless of the future state of FluffyChat. As mentioned in the matrix room I'll help cook up scripts, packaging, UI, whatever to make it happen. 😀

I've been making progress on the packaging. I've got the whole thing down to under 50MB now (versus more than 200MB). Just sorting out the click package and figuring out a basic UI to start with.

For those interested I cooked up a minor update taking care of a few missing things and the bug with saving the configuration for the first time. It contains the same binary as before just mainly cosmetic. Click packages can be found at the link.

I'm still working on chasing down the image loading issue in FluffyChat as well as getting cross compiling fully sorted. Progress continues.

I've published another minor update. This release includes additional homeserver settings for http proxy and ssl verification. It also now has a global setting to update the log level to assist with troubleshooting.

      https://git.sr.ht/~thrrgilag/pantalaimon-ut/refs/0.4.0

I'll be reaching out the OpenStore folks later this week and see about getting it reviewed and published. Then the focus will be on getting the interactive features wired up.

    • RE: FluffyChat QML and Pantalaimon development

Thanks all for the feedback. I decided to go ahead and move forward with spinning up a fork so that at the very least can continue with bug fixes and ideally start adding the much desired missing features. I've got a new name in mind so not to be confused with the legacy or current FluffyChat project. I'll get the project spun up on gitlab soon. Please do continue with those wish list time of items or if there is an outstanding issue that's been bugging provide me the link so I can review and add it to my early hit list.

I've gone ahead and made the project public on GitLab for anyone who is curious as to where I'm heading with this. https://gitlab.com/thrrgilag/clacks. I've still got some changes to make around branding and need to come up with some artwork, and probably sort out translations. My initial release will be essentially like fluffychat 13.3 with a new name and a few bug fixes included. The big focus will then be on integrated E2EE so the code base will start to diverge a lot.

I'll make a more broader announcement in the near future.

Dekko should build, install and run now!

I took it for a spin on my laptop running 18.04 but it failed. (Issue #104 I'm presuming). I tried it on another machine I have with 16.04 still and it was able to build and install. Now onto the next step and try to get things functional. 😄

I agree with the importance of working email client.
Actually, I would like to try Ubuntu Touch, and the lack of tolerable email client stops me.

I think dekko is getting close to being usable on xenial, just a matter of fixing a couple of bugs still lingering with the build. It already works great using the current stable 15.04 (vivid) release so you can take that for a spin.

By the way, its curious what would cost to adopt https://sailfishos.org/wiki/Email? Can we run their programs easily?

I believe the email app like others are not open source by Jolla. Just the framework referenced above which dekko I believe is already using. Also given that Silica is also proprietary it like other Sailfish apps would have to be modified in order to work properly.

@theare27 what device did you try it on? I know I had space issues with the Nexus 5 and someone else had space problems with the FP2. I have a pre-compiled tar for armhf you can try, just unpack in the homedir and edit the config file for your homeserver. thrrgilag.net/pantalaimon.tar.gz

I want to get this into a proper click package, maybe this weekend if I can get a couple of tweaks cooked up.

On a side note, there is also Hydrogen, a matrix web client developed by Element/New Vector.
It works suprisingly well in Morph Browser with the exception of notifications. It is somewhat bare-bones, but at least it supports E2EE and is in active development. I have been using it as a rudimentary web app created with Webber.
Maybe this could also be a good starting point for a sustainable matrix client on Ubuntu Touch?

So something of a container to allow for push notifications? I had thought about that before Cinny came into the picture. And that might be an interesting option if someone wanted to tackle it. Ultimately I like the idea of having something more native and really enjoyed using FluffyChat on Ubuntu Touch when it was actively developed. My hope is that creating the fork will give an opportunity for development to continue on it's own path.

    • FluffyChat QML and Pantalaimon development

I've been reviewing my old project list and wanted to take a quick pulse of the community. Now that Cinny was ported over and actively developed is there much need or interest in either FluffyChat QML with E2EE via Pantalaimon or otherwise? I'm debating if I should drop these off my list to make way for other interesting Ubuntu Touch related things? Or if there is enough interest for a fork to incorporate fixes and bring in E2EE support along with other features? Do let me know what the mood is around that?

Thanks for putting this together. 😁

With regards to the thumbnail issue in encrypted rooms, I think I've narrowed down the issue in FluffyChat, just need to get a proper patch put together. I'll post an update when it happens.

@jimmypesto I'll do some testing on the connection thing, I pretty much have only done testing on WiFi so I didn't catch any issues around lost connections yet. Sounds like it might also be helpful to include a reset button of sorts, to clear the db when the session gets lost to it can be redone. I'll also take a closer look at that UI bug, seems odd that would happen.

As an aside, although I'm not a regular user of Ubuntu Touch these days I do intened to keep supporting this for a while so do let me know if things go sideways again and I'll do my best to stay on top of it. In addition to this thread feel free to contact me directly, hit me up in public chat, or the mailing list.

@jimmypesto I've been able to get my ubuntu touch devices back up and running and I can reproduce the problems. Unforunatly I don't have a fix yet but I'll work on that and see what I can come up with. Likley will be a new version of the package if I can get a newer build functional.

There are moments when I wonder if it'll just be easier to add encryption support directly into FluffyChat QML but time is a luxury I don't have.

@jimmypesto there are two log files, one is labeled as pantalaimon-ut which is just the configuration UI, and the other one is called pantalaimon which is the deamon that does all the work so that's the one to look at. You can use the Logviewer app from the openstore to access them easily.

Unfortunatly I haven't done any testing on it since my main ubuntu touch device stopped booting. I'll have to get that sorted or another device up and running before I can work on it further.

@jimmypesto okay I'll see if I can reproduce and report back if I have an answer of any sort. If you could see if there is anything useful in the logs, I'm guessing not but worth a shot.
