  • RE: FluffyChat QML and Pantalaimon development

I've gone ahead and made the project public on GitLab for anyone who is curious as to where I'm heading with this. https://gitlab.com/thrrgilag/clacks. I've still got some changes to make around branding and need to come up with some artwork, and probably sort out translations. My initial release will be essentially like fluffychat 13.3 with a new name and a few bug fixes included. The big focus will then be on integrated E2EE so the code base will start to diverge a lot.

I'll make a more broader announcement in the near future.

  • RE: FluffyChat QML and Pantalaimon development

@drikk said in FluffyChat QML and Pantalaimon development:

On a side note, there is also Hydrogen, a matrix web client developed by Element/New Vector.
It works suprisingly well in Morph Browser with the exception of notifications. It is somewhat bare-bones, but at least it supports E2EE and is in active development. I have been using it as a rudimentary web app created with Webber.
Maybe this could also be a good starting point for a sustainable matrix client on Ubuntu Touch?

So something of a container to allow for push notifications? I had thought about that before Cinny came into the picture. And that might be an interesting option if someone wanted to tackle it. Ultimately I like the idea of having something more native and really enjoyed using FluffyChat on Ubuntu Touch when it was actively developed. My hope is that creating the fork will give an opportunity for development to continue on it's own path.

  • RE: FluffyChat QML and Pantalaimon development

Thanks all for the feedback. I decided to go ahead and move forward with spinning up a fork so that at the very least can continue with bug fixes and ideally start adding the much desired missing features. I've got a new name in mind so not to be confused with the legacy or current FluffyChat project. I'll get the project spun up on gitlab soon. Please do continue with those wish list time of items or if there is an outstanding issue that's been bugging provide me the link so I can review and add it to my early hit list.

  • FluffyChat QML and Pantalaimon development

I've been reviewing my old project list and wanted to take a quick pulse of the community. Now that Cinny was ported over and actively developed is there much need or interest in either FluffyChat QML with E2EE via Pantalaimon or otherwise? I'm debating if I should drop these off my list to make way for other interesting Ubuntu Touch related things? Or if there is enough interest for a fork to incorporate fixes and bring in E2EE support along with other features? Do let me know what the mood is around that?

Thanks for putting this together. 😁

With regards to the thumbnail issue in encrypted rooms, I think I've narrowed down the issue in FluffyChat, just need to get a proper patch put together. I'll post an update when it happens.

@jimmypesto I'll do some testing on the connection thing, I pretty much have only done testing on WiFi so I didn't catch any issues around lost connections yet. Sounds like it might also be helpful to include a reset button of sorts, to clear the db when the session gets lost to it can be redone. I'll also take a closer look at that UI bug, seems odd that would happen.

    Pantalaimon UT 0.6.0 released

This is an important bug fix release which resolves an issue with messages sent as unencrypted in encrypted rooms. Please update and restart the pantalaimon service.

As an aside, although I'm not a regular user of Ubuntu Touch these days I do intened to keep supporting this for a while so do let me know if things go sideways again and I'll do my best to stay on top of it. In addition to this thread feel free to contact me directly, hit me up in public chat, or the mailing list.

@jimmypesto I've been able to get my ubuntu touch devices back up and running and I can reproduce the problems. Unforunatly I don't have a fix yet but I'll work on that and see what I can come up with. Likley will be a new version of the package if I can get a newer build functional.

There are moments when I wonder if it'll just be easier to add encryption support directly into FluffyChat QML but time is a luxury I don't have.

  • RE: FluffyChat Encryption via Pantalaimon

@jimmypesto there are two log files, one is labeled as pantalaimon-ut which is just the configuration UI, and the other one is called pantalaimon which is the deamon that does all the work so that's the one to look at. You can use the Logviewer app from the openstore to access them easily.

Unfortunatly I haven't done any testing on it since my main ubuntu touch device stopped booting. I'll have to get that sorted or another device up and running before I can work on it further.

@jimmypesto okay I'll see if I can reproduce and report back if I have an answer of any sort. If you could see if there is anything useful in the logs, I'm guessing not but worth a shot.

@jimmypesto could be something left over from the old connection confusing things. Try doing the following.

    1. stop and disable pantalaimon
    2. delete or rename /home/phablet/.local/share/pantalaimon
    3. enable and start pantalaimon
    4. login through fluffychat

And if that's all good try another reboot to ensure it comes remains logged in.

@hugehead The image loading issue should have been resolved with the last update to FluffyChat. Can you share some specifics about your setup?

    1. Device
    2. Ubuntu Touch version
    3. FluffyChat version
    4. Pantalaimon-UT version

  • RE: Questions using Pantalaimon from the end-user perspective

@nocturn-adrift you can leave the defaults and it should work without issue. The proxy isn't nessary unless you have specific network restrictions you need to worry about. You can generally leave that blank. The SSL flag should be enabled, it ensures the connection between pantalaimon and matrix.org remains secure. Generally there should be no reason to turn that off and I'll probably remove the switch with my next update.

@jonius as I recall it builds but doesn't necessarily run. But it's been a while so I don't recall exactly what the issue was. I'll take a look again when I get a moment and see what I can get working.

    @thrrgilag nice!

May I ask what keeps you from uploading the app to the OpenStore? I think it is useful the way it is right now.

At this point I think it's mostly a matter of me not having the time to chase it down. I'll see if I can dig up that information and figure out what that process is to get it approved and submitted in the next week or so.

@thrrgilag Today Fluffy crashed and I had to login again. Afterwards the warning sign was gone.

Don't forget if you have to sign in again, that fluffy is pointing to pantalaimon

Is there a recommended way to set up E2EE between two ppl with lets say 2 devices each (and one of these is UB Fluffy + Pantalaimon)?

Because there isn't any controls available from the UB Fluffy+Pantalaimon side you'll have to start the encrypted chat using another client that supports encryption such as Element. Once you've done that it should work in UB Fluffy. Keep in mind that if you have previously encrypted messages those won't be decryptable since you can't easily import the keys from another session. But new messages should decrypt just fine.

  • RE: FluffyChat Encryption via Pantalaimon

@jimmypesto it has to do with verification of the client session (or lack thereof). Unforunatly that isn't exposed through a UI right with this build. You can blindly verify the session through Element but otherwise as it stands there isn't a good way to do it atm.

@jimmypesto you can just blow away that build folder on your device. The click package has a UI that you can use to set and update your settings as well as enable or disable the background service.
