    • RE: 8"-9" Tablet

Thanks to everyone for your responses.

I knew that the Dell could run Linux but I didn't know it could run it fairly easily. I think I will pursue that route, it's probably the most viable.

I just got my hands on a NOOK HD+ and installed Lineage on it. After I posted I read the info regarding a how to build a port for a device, the requirement being that Lineage was available for it. I think it's beyond my skill set but I may try that as well. The NOOK had incredible display and decent hardware. I believe there had a been a UT build for it before.

Again, thanks for your help. I still find it hard to believe that Linux on a tablet is not more available. There are no decent tablet OS at this time, it seems like a niche to fill.

    • 8"-9" Tablet

I wish that there were more tablet options for UT. I have been working on having a tablet that is usable as a device to surf the web; just want something to read online magazines.
I have tried Android with many browsers and any numerous variations of settings to get some kind of unusable font size consistency and readability but I have had zero success.

I want to have a Linux tablet. The Pinetab seems to not be a viable solution yet, installing a Linux distro on some type of tablet seems to be a Quixotic adventure. Why there isn't one or two 8" tablets that can run some sort of Linux available is a mystery to me. It's a common request on many a forum. (a 10" tablet is not an option either, I find it way to large and heavy to use as a hand held reader)

I don't really expect a good answer or solution at this point, I'm just shooting in the dark. At our level of technology, an electronic magazine reader shouldn't be that difficult. If I pick up my latest issue of Discover magazine I can just read it, the font sizes are usable and consistent. Why not on an electronic device that I can setup myself? I was using UT on my phone for a while but it wasn't quite what I needed and find LineageOS to work really well for what I need in a phone (Nexus 4). However, no tablet options work well at all.

Considering that there is some decent inexpensive hardware (Amazon Fire ?) maybe someone could look to the tablet arena a bit. I would try but I am no programmer by any means. Just offering a suggestion since the demand is seems to be quite large. If any one else has suggestions I am open to all, this is a problem I have been working on for several years and haven't been able to figure out a workable option.

      Thanks for reading my ranting

    • Nook HD+ ?

      Hi

I got my hands on a Nook HD+ cheap and was wondering if this method to install UT is still viable?

    • RE: Having a lot of issues

Just a quick follow up. It seems a lot of the issues may be related to a flaky proximity sensor. I was able to monitor it with a sensor tool I installed from F-Droid. Very intermittent. Tracked the problem down when the phone screen started going to black on the Lineage install after a couple of days. Seems to be a common problem on the Nexus 4 but there is also a chip in the glass right near the sensor, so it may be that as well.

    • RE: Having a lot of issues

I did a complete re-install using UBports installer 4.11 beta. Obviously different in the way a lot of things looked and worked but still all the same problems (except the send icon in messages now visible in portrait mode)

Re-flashed the device with TWRP and then flashed LineageOS MicroG. Everything works, no problems. So not hardware - must be an incompatibility somewhere. I am certain the device is an LG Nexus 4, so IDK.

I really wanted to use UT, I prefer the UI over the Android UI and hoped I could keep all my computing in the Linux world. If anyone has any suggestions on why this wouldn't work on this phone I may be willing to try again but the Lineage flash seems to working flawlessly, much faster loading apps and it has a lot of features that were on on my wish list.

Again, I was coming from Web OS and that still is the best UI I have experienced as far as mobile devices go.

Thanks to everyone for all the support

    • RE: Install Lineage OS

Getting back to this because of problems I am experiencing with UT. I appreciate your response and the tip on MidroG.

I was able to successfully install TWRP - someone at the XDA forum was kind enough to post a step by step procedure and it went without a hitch.

Since I will be wiping the device for any other ROMs I will try re-installing UT and wipe the user data this time.

    • RE: Having a lot of issues

I have re-run the installer twice now, first with the stable channel and then with the RC channel (without wiping user data) to see if there were updates that might help.

Still having all the same issues. The phone was working well when I first installed UT, these problems have developed over time. Bluetooth is now unusable. The phone is now dropping incoming calls on connection.

Is there anyone who can help me troubleshoot this? Is is possibly a hardware issue? I'd really like to use UT but it's become almost impossible to use the phone.

      Thanks

    • Having a lot of issues

      Hi

I am having a lot of problems with UT. It was working ok at first install but seems to be developing more and more problems. I re-installed last nite (without wiping user data) to see if that would help but the problems persist.

      updated with UBports installer 0.4.9-beta

      LGE Nexus 4
      OS build number OTA-11
      Stable channel
      Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Not sure what has changed, any advice on how to proceed appreciated.

      Thanks

Bluetooth mic not working with skype - distorted and garbled, always been a problem - Plantronics PLT V5200 headset

Bluetooth disconnects during phone call several seconds after call connects - new problem. I had been able to work around this by forgetting and re-discovering headset but that no longer helps

Music play with no problems but that's not something I use

Screen goes to black on phone call connecting - new problem

Screen not waking up on receiving phone calls - new problem

Screen not waking up on receiving text messages - new problem

Screen not waking up on alarm - new problem

No on screen notice from text received - new problem

No on screen notice from call missed - ?? don't remember if that was always like that

Can only send text in portrait mode - send icon is off screen, always been a problem

Quick Memo - items disappear on right to left swipe, this has happened several times now - new problem

Rotation sensitivity is bothersome, screen rotates kind of erratically.

Restarted - error in UT installer says FAILED (write to devicefailed in sendbuffer protocol error)

      also - killed";false, "code":1, signal":null, "cmd"; "/opt/ubports/installer/resources/app.asar.unpacked/ .....

What should I do to make this work?

    • Trying to Re-install

Trying to reflash UT. Got as far as "Flashing Firmware - Flashing partitions using fastboot" The device (Nexus 4) shows the open droid and says "downloading... but it seems to have hung up at this point. There is a "Start" button at the top of the nexus screen - do I need to press start? How long does flashing take? Can I safely get out of this mode?

      Thanks

    • No Devices Supported

Went here to check my codename device and there are no devices here
      https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/

Having a multitude of problems but one big bug is that I can't install the OTA update. It tells me that I have downloaded it, when I hit restart and install nothing happens.

Wanted to re-install UT but ran into problems with update installer since I don't have the udev rules installed. dont't have the time right now to do it and I am not sure of my codename - mako for a Nexus 4? Is that right? Need that info for the udev rules

I have to say, this has gotten way more complicated that the first time I installed UT

    • RE: Differences between Nexus 4 models?

Thanks for all the responses and the breakdown of models. My main criteria for a phone is different than most people, I never use social media, seldom access the Internet and mostly just want reliable phone service and texting without invasive ads, some note taking and decent photos. Size is most crucial, I just want it to fit comfortably in my front pocket - and I don't want to spend much more than $50. The Nexus 4 is just over this size, but it's the smallest I can find that supports UT at this time. I had been using a WebOS Palm Pixi for the longest time, still the best phone I have owned.

I have not noticed overheating problems but again I don't really use my phone that much during the course of the day. UT runs fine, maybe not super speedy but not any slowness that I find noticeable. I have a handful of other issues that irk me but I want to have a phone to clone so I can safely re-install UT to see if that clears any of them up.

I will pick up another E960 and continue to experiment with alternate OSs. I like UT but still curious to see how something like Paranoid Android works. It also supports the Nexus 4.

Thanks again, really appreciate the advice

    • Differences between Nexus 4 models?

I am looking to purchase another Nexus 4 to run UT on. I have an E960 now and have been searching eBay and see model numbers like SPH_D720, SCH-I515, LMY48T. Will any model support UT or do I need to stick to a specific model? I am having some issues with the E960 and want to have a phone to back/clone to.

      Thanks

I have an LG Nexus 4 and am on the stable channel.

I will try to re-install. I am assuming that when you say run it without wipe that my data (notes, contacts, mail, texts) will remain intact?
