I tried a bunch of times with no luck. I finally went this route to export from my computer and import to my device.

Worked great.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm just so used to having a single button to get back to the desktop.
I guess I can swipe and press instead of just press.
how does one know when the next OTA is coming? Or, what the current version is?
yeah, I didn't know if there was a function I was missing that brought me back to the "desktop" or "home" or whatever that place is where you start.
I guess not. My device is the OPO, so no physical button.
I've searched and looked at all the various answers. Still no luck. Any new information?
How do I figure out what the most recent release is? Seems like it would be pretty straight forward.
Help! How do I get home?
that's pretty much it. I have been able to get a variety of errors but no contacts.
"sign in with google temporarily disabled for this app" is the most common result of attempting to import contacts.
ideas?
as promised, here's the solution. I cleaned the contacts on my sim with alcohol and placed a piece of tape on the back of the sim card.
So far so good with mobile network. Many other issues, but at least this one is solved.
Thank you for all the replies. I'm going to play around with it more today.
You have all been more helpful than my initial post warranted and I truly appreciate it.
I'm sorry. I'm frustrated. I need to take a few deep breathes before I post next time.
I expected installation issues. I've rooted enough phones and run enough custom ROMs to expect that. I got through the installation in about an hour without too much trouble. No big deal.
Finally got it booted up and found the UI underwhelming. Ok, I started to get antiquated, try to customize a little, got some apps so I could customize a little. It's fine. I'll get used to it.
So, I put my SIM card in and boot up. Can't see it. Out and back in, nothing. Couple more reboots and it sees it. Hooray! Then after about 30 seconds, it can't see it again. While just sitting there. Reboot, no luck. Out and back in, no luck.
When finding an answer to a problem with one of the "promoted devices" became such a challenge, that's when I became frustrated.
I'll get back to it at some point soon. As for now, I need my SIM in my other phone.
I will certainly post the solution when I figure it out.
So, I'm really here because my Oneplus 1 only intermittently recognizes my SIM card. It would be great if it worked but, honestly, I bought this to play around with because I thought the idea of a linux phone sounded great. It is not.
The support, tutorials, guides, and wiki, in so much as they exist at all, are terrible. There are barely any screen shots of what to expect from the UI.
Searching the forums is pointless. Even the advanced search brings up 4 ancient "answers" that don't address my issue.
A search of the UBports youtube channel for "sim" elicits the episode "Ubunto touch Q&A 38". Apparently, there are 72 videos all with the same "topic" of Q&A. Very helpful.
To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. I'm sure I could, possibly, make this phone work in a somewhat adequate way, but really, I find it hard to believe that I could get it to a point that I find acceptable.
Maybe postmarkets will be more fun.
Oh well.
