There is a way. But it's a bumpy road.
The messages are stored in a sqlite database IIRC and you can access it.
But there is no automated way to import your exported messages.
You'll need to make a script to parse your XML file and query the database for each entry.
If you're interested in trying, let me know, I'll try to dig out where the database is.
