Just saw the convergence section for the nexus5 is working already?
What do I need to try it? (hardware)
-
@fishfingers44 you need a bluetooth mouse & keyboard, and a slimport cable
-
Bluetooth mouse and slimport are required.
You can use the OSK but of course having a bluetooth keyboard as well will give you the best experience.
Remember "Slimport" is the keyword here. not MHL, not microUSB to HDMI...just microUSB Slimport cableand if you have the spare money, buy a portable monitor, Eyoyo has cheap one

You also need a monitor with HDMI input, or a very obscure--powered--slimport-to-vga box (it's clunky, and of a very specific design) if you must use vga. I tracked it down on German Amazon, not available for shipping in U.S.. The slimport to HDMI is the only real proven solution; There are countless forum posts around the web where people are trying to get slimport to vga and reaching dead ends. Buying a new monitor, if necessary, is the path of least resistance.
I'm just setting up convergence myself. I'm very impressed with my Motorola 89451N Bluetooth keyboard; got it cheap and refurbished on ebay, and it's super sturdy. My mouse however is a bust, I'm looking to see what's proven in that department, and you might want to follow along here: https://forums.ubports.com/topic/2318/known-working-bluetooth-mice-for-convergence
If anyone knows of a slimport usb-hub solution, that would also be an ideal accessory. I'm going to attempt to daisy-chain an OTG hub with micro usb power through the micro usb power connection on the slimport adapter, when it arrives in the mail. I'm not holding my breath.
As mentioned above, don't be fooled by MHL hdmi usb-hub combos, Nexus 5 is strictly slimport.

Slimport + USB hub won't work on the current devices. I think that's only possible in newer devices with type-C.
I got slimport HDMI + VGA Adpater working in the past. The key is the combination of cables The HDMI cable should be short enough and the external power via microUSB in the slimport adapter is a must.

Not just type C, but it has to be using the port correctly to use alt mode for the video, while still allowing regular USB 3.x to work. Devices that do USB 2.0 on type C do not do this.

This is the thread I followed on the matter: https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/57933/how-to-connect-your-nexus-phone-to-a-vga-projector
I'm glad to here the situation is more hopeful! (my gears are now a-turnin')

I just want to be sure, before investing money, that on nexus 5 I can have two bluetooth devices at the same time working together (meaning keyboard and mouse) because I already have BT keyboard and working Slimport adapter ... last thing from HW perspective I am missing is mouse
-
@thepeter Yup it works. I believe bluetooth supports up to 7 devices at the same time. Not sure about the latest versions
Been using that setup for a long time with my Nexus 7 and 5. Slimport + BT Keyboard + BT Mouse + sometimes BT earphone.Beware with some advanced BT mouse though especially those with extra buttons like in Logitech. They might be detected as keyboard as well so OSK will be hidden even without connecting a real keyboard. And there's a current bug that even after disconnecting it, the device won't detect it so OSK will still be hidden. In the edge channel, this can be worked around by enabling the new setting to show OSK even with a physical keyboard present.
