I've seen some threads on the Volla and the Gigaset gs290 being identical/very-close-keen.

GS290 isn't listed under the supported device, however the general gist as I understand it is that UT can be installed on the GS290.

What's the status of this device? Can UT run on the GS290 (with manual selection).
Does the GS290 needs a formal port on it's own (following the porting guide)?

I'd appreciate any info related to the GS290 and UT.

      S.

Please see https://forums.ubports.com/topic/4556/volla-phone-identical-to-gigaset-gs290?_=1614171855453 - I told there that we do not recommend it, while it seems technically possible, because we do not want to get the bad press if it fails πŸ˜‰

          Hi @squigly

          To give a simple answer.
The port has been made for the Volla phone.
Thus the installer works and is tested for the Volla phone.

One can try and make a dedicated port for the GS290.
But yes both ports would be very similar, but UBports as a foundation cannot give any guaranty wether the Volla port will work with a GS290.

It seems to work for some, but we don't know the risk to do it for yourself.

            @Flohack @AppLee

Right, perfectly understood. And just to be clear, I have no intention of "robbing" Volla from all the hard work they are putting in.
I have interest in the GS290 for a corporate project I'm intending to carry on and I'm fully willing to port (or fund the porting of UT) to the GS290.

My initial question was to understand the feasibility:
My assumption is that if Volla are basing on GS290 and it works perfectly fine (or at least, reasonably fine) then it's a low-risk project which I can justify the time/budget allocation.

If, however, the GS290 and the Volla are different hardware to the point that porting may be a dead-end, I'll need to treat it as a high-risk R&D project, plan accordingly and probably find better alternatives (which I'm kind'a short on right now).

            I appreciate both your answers.
            S.

@squigly said in UBports on Gigaset GS290:

I think the differences are not that much πŸ™‚

@squigly as a Volla phone owner, I can say hardware wise, they are close enough to run the same software as GS290, I know this from installing /e/ on my Volla, as far as going the other way and running UT on a GS290, its 100% possible, but as mentioned, the path to do it is not recommended (or the faint of heart), I have probably bricked my Volla more times han most people will trying to install ROMs so I have some good practice in so far

Whether you think you can, or you can't, if you do not try, you will never truly know. So give it a Go.

Noted, thank you for the information.
I am looking at what it takes to create a proper port for the GS290.

(It should be noted that such port would be up-streamed of course).

@squigly it seems (if i refer to the other thread given by Flohack) only vendor ID is different between VP and GS...
