Dear everyone,
Here's a fresh new update:
We are pleased to announce that our developer now has a fully working device. It's a Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, which she received from a member of this community right here! (Thank you @mardy )
As for the Vollaphone, it has been returned to the sender for legal customs reasons. Nevertheless, a new shipment will be sent to the developer's business address.
Anyway, work can now begin in earnest!
We are proud and happy to have raised over 3'000 Euros in donations at this stage. That said, the campaign continues, each participation brings us a little closer to our goal: Enabling decent use of Android applications in the Ubuntu Touch ecosystem.
All details are available here: https://gofund.me/acb31504
See you soon, for some new exciting updates.

Very excited about this - fingers crossed chat applications with push notifications will at some point be supported, though I see how that might be challenging. Great initiative in either case.
And shout out to the anonymous donor who gave 2 500 euros earlier today.

Dear all,
Let's give you some fresh updates.
We are very excited to announce that a primitive Anbox container has newly been built based on LineageOS 17 (Android 10), on a handful of Halium 9 devices. (Mainly on Redmi Note 7 currently)
Although it is not yet operational now, things look well promising.
The new phase now consists of various debugging tasks & adjustments.Of course, we are only at the very beginning, far away from a usable stage. But we'll be sure to call for alpha testers when the time comes.
Many thanks to Alexandra, Erfan and all other devs involved for their precious work!
We remind that Anbox is a very important project, which requires a lot of time and resources.
Thanks to your support, we can continue to work towards the success of this amazing operation.
Stay tuned for the next exciting update!
Cheers,
Rudi and Steve

@xray2000
LinageOS 16 is Android 9 based. So I guess that goes better together with Halium9?
Edit: ok great to hear that the Halium9 can work with Anboxed Android10. -
@povoq It was a typo from us i just fix it

Dear all,
We are delighted to provide you with another exciting weekly update!
Considerable progress has been made over the past week.
The development team has grown with some impressive work from Erfan and Luka, who we thank very much.
The Anbox container is currently partially operational on the Vollaphone and the FX Pro 1.
It is a LineageOS session that starts as a virtual machine on top of the Ubuntu Touch session.
It also allows access now to the camera and some games (SuperTuxKart for example). Here is a short demonstration video:
https://twitter.com/Khode_Erfan/status/1388881976330006530?s=20This progress could never have happened without your support. We thank you very much for your valuable participation.
The next steps include many challenges, such as activating the sensors, porting to the other Halium 9 devices, making it work stable and efficiently, as well as creating an installation script. This will probably be the most time-consuming and delicate phase. Indeed, Anbox is not yet usable in its current state.
But we are more than confident in the success of this project, and the next few months are looking good!See you soon for more news!

Dear all,
Many of you are waiting for the latest developments this week:
The LXC Anbox container is now created. The debugging tasks as well as the activation of the sensors are in progress. These small adjustments are actually a long part of the work.
A next phase will be the creation of the kernel for each device (long road), which could potentially be integrated into the Ubuntu Touch root and thus distributed through OTAs.
From everyone involved in this project: Thank you for your support.
We look forward to providing you with further updates.

Dear all,
The latest news from the campaign are very encouraging: The majority of the sensors have been activated in the container kernel.
This means that Anbox is now practically operational on all Halium 9 and 10 devices. (needs to be tested though)
Erfan will soon publish a new video presentation and instructions on how to install Anbox for those who want to test it.
Beware, however, that the installation procedure is particularly tedious and initially reserved for very experienced users.
In a second phase, an installation script will be proposed to facilitate the implementation of Anbox.
Thank you for your precious support!
Come back here soon for more news!

Is there some technical reason Halium7 devices are not supported? Those still seem to make up the majority of Ubports supported devices.
-
I am impressed by the rapid progress, which is being made here.
Is there a way to support it without a credit card? -
Hello all,
I have already been asked a few times to share the repo of the new Anbox.
Apparently there are people who would like to follow the development process.

@luksus No sorry...

Dear all,
Rudi and Me are pleased to announce that the Vollaphone is now the first device to officially support the new Anbox service.
As such, we are pleased to offer you the opportunity to test it on your Vollaphone and get your feedback.
In the future, the kernel will be gradually extended to other Halium 9 and 10 devices.
The installation procedure is described below: https://xray2000.gitlab.io/anbox/
Use now your favourite Android applications on your Vollaphone with Ubuntu Touch!
Hope to hear from you soon!
-
@stanwood Thanks to you both and the dev for all the work and effort so far and the regular updates.

Next step after this one, open all UBports supported devices to all Android applications ?

Can you please let me know if the patches I added to the Redmi Note 7 Pro (
violet
) kernel are enough to get Anbox working? They are the last 4 in https://gitlab.com/ubports/community-ports/android9/xiaomi-redmi-note-7-pro/kernel-xiaomi-violet/-/commits/halium-9.0-anbox10/

@mardy The ones that palasaty have added would be fine.

Hey,
Since we have encountered some more problems with the new Anbox, we recommend that you do not install it at this time!
We have therefore taken the install guide offline on the website, for now.
We would like to ask you to be patient until it is more stable.
Thanks!
Greetings,
Rudi & Steve -
@xray2000 Personally, I haven't tried it on my Volla yet. There is no need to rush. A stable system is indeed very important, as well as being able to easily install/uninstall what we want. Anbox will also need to incorporate security criteria so that UT's security is not compromised, this is important. Also, with Anbox managing android apk, there is always the risk of importing viruses or other polutions despite all precautions, right? Thoughts from a future user.
