@john-sarghaff Very odd. Have you tried a comlete shut down and restart. My messaging app does something similar.

@john-sarghaff that is weird, do you see anything in logs ( /home/phablet/.cache/upstart/application-legacy-address-book-app-.log) ?

To work around, you could remove your contact database: /home/phablet/.local/share/evolution/addressbook/system/contacts.db and reboot and then re-import contacts.
But best would be to know why it occured

@john-sarghaff The same happened on my Nexus 5 a month ago. Strangely they all re-appeared as soon as I pressed the "add contact" button.

@lduboeuf Where would I find such logs?

Open contact app, open logviewer after installing from openstore, find the right log.
For instance mine, where i have errors i can't tell why...

@keneda The same problem occurred when I opened the Contact application and tried to get the logs: all contacts disappeared until I added a new contact whereupon all my contacts re-appeared. So that gives a fresh log of the problem which I can not find a way to attach to this reply. Any hints?

                    Transcribing the log it reads:
"org.freedesktop.Dbus. Error. Noreply""Message recipient disconnected from message bus without replying"

You can copy log content with one of the upper right corner icon, then paste it in a pastebin link you put here.

@keneda Thanks for that. Since my last message I have another log for comparison from just a moment ago when Contacts opened normally. Unfortunately Pastebin is bombarding me with cookies and advertisements that are difficult to eliminate so I refuse to use it. I'll look for another way to present the logs.
