File recovery on ubuntu touch

Hi there,
my phone was recently bricked, then brought back to life when I sent it back to the manufacturer (volla) now I'd like to try and recover the files (images, videos) I had on the device.
has anyone successfully used a file recovery program on a ubuntu touch device?
I would like to use testdisk, I'm attempting to install it in a libertine container, will this work? as the docs say libertine will only have limited access to the device (only certain folders) and I would need testdisk to scan all the unused memory.
I think I'm going along the wrong path and perhaps I'd have to wait for someone to port testdisk to ubuntu touch.
Does anyone have any tips/advice?

Sorry I have no idea about actual recovery of your files but I feel like you should have asked Volla to try to recover your files for you. Depending on the kind of brick, your files may be recoverable easily.

@alanjw I was able to copy pictures from a Nexus 5 to a Linux computer just by linking them with a USB cable, then opening the File Manager. I assume you can do the same with any data such as music, videos, documents, etc. if the Volla phone has a File Manager.

@kugiigi Oh I did ask them to recovery my files too. My request was ignored, along with when I asked how much the repair would cost. And then I even wrote an email to say thanks for repairing the phone, but it would have been nice if they had responded to recovering the files etc. No response. So yeah they repaired the phone, but otherwise communication with them hasn't been good.

@cliffcoggin Thanks for this, I had seen that I can copy and backup my files. which I should have done before the phone was bricked by an update. Wish I had. Problem now is how to try and recovery the files that were on the phone.

@alanjw first off, you are certain this is the same phone you sent, and not a replacement?

@arubislander Pretty sure it's the same one. I stuck a sticker on the back with my details.

@alanjw OK. Then you must know though that everytime you use your phone you make it less likely that you will be able to recover your files.
What you need to do is find a way to make an image of the internal storage asap, and then you could try the regular file restore operations on that image .

@arubislander Yes, i'm not using the phone. I'm waiting for a solution. Making an image of the system, with the free space imaged too would be great. Anyone know how to do that?
Or mounting the phone so it could be scanned from another device would be great - can that be done? -
You need to image the device and then decrypt the image if it is encrypted and pick through the files. There are various programs on line such as Pandora Box hex dump. Unless you know what you are doing, it is not a straightforward task as a lot of it is carried out by Forensic services that will keep a lot of this under wraps for professional reasons.
