With Xenial, for the devices with a notch (like the Volla Phone) there was a script to patch it and move the indicators to the right:
https://github.com/JamiKettunen/lomiri-notch-hax
It still hasn't been updated to Focal, but it looks simple (substituting "unity8" for "lomiri" in the code, as far as I can tell).
Has anybody already produced this new patch? Or is it worth it to fork the above repo and change it?

@wgarcia I have a notch middle top xaiomi redme note 9 pro ......super annoying is right in the middle of my notification bar and menu options

@wgarcia The maintainer is very active, so maybe if you open a PR against the repo with the proposed change it would be accepted.
-
@arubislander It seems that he already updated the script for Focal, I was still using an old version. I haven't tried the new version yet, I will try it and report back.
-
Indeed, the current version of the script works well for the original Volla Phone.

And there is also this very interesting proposal present https://gitlab.com/ubports/development/core/packaging/ayatana-indicators/ayatana-indicator-display/-/issues/2#note_1231292424 so hopefully one day it will get into the images by default.
