Koodo Support

Have any Canadian users here tried the Volla X23 on the Koodo network ? Was wondering if sms and calls currently work before I go drop $900 on it.

@Simmonz I've got no relevant input, except that you might also consider whether you need MMS, and if that'll work. A while back I was with Public Mobile (under the Telus umbrella, like Koodo), and got a message that MMS would stop working with my phone. They suggested that I buy a newer phone from their "affiliate partner".
Sure enough MMS stopped working, everything else continued fine. This change was Telus wide. I asked for technical details of why that was happening and got nothing beyond "network changes". They couldn't confirm whether a given phone, if not on their officially supported list, would work or not, so I just switched networks. Lucky Mobile (Bell) has been fine.Hopefully someone else can help, but if you learn more elsewhere, please report here. The combination of high price and uncertainty about network compatibility with Volla and Fairphone makes it hard to want to spend that kind of money for those outside Europe, just to cross your fingers and hope everything works.
Posts like these, easily searchable for potential UT users, can help many people. -
Hi @Simmonz
Have you reached out to Volla?
They are working with local carriers in Canada to support their devices -
@AppLee Wow, that is nice news to hear. Thanks for mentioning!

So I had a chance to use the X23 today while running errands. I was in Brantford, Ancaster, Onondaga, as well as other parts of Brant county, to give those in Ontario an idea. Overall signal strength was good in urban parts and poor in rural ones. In my basement at home I was in and out as to whether I could even send a text or make a call as I am out in the boonies. . This wasn't the case when I had an X23 on Volla OS a couple years ago. Some good news is that it picked up my APN right away. I did however have to manually input the APN settings. After that internet worked on mobile data right away. I tried sending a picture via text and it failed though so MMS is not quite there. VOLTE support was listed on my cell menu so that is a good sign. I've been considering a switch to Rogers for other reasons so if I do make that change i'll make an updated post about that experience.

@Simmonz Can be worth playing around a bit with APN settings for MMS. I needed two separate APNs for Internet and MMS. I was able to use a tethering APN for my Internet and the nornal one fot MMS. Some seem to need this, others have found the opposite, that it only works with combined Internet and MMS on oneAPN setting.
I still lose about 1 in 10 of incoming MMS messages, but at least I get a notification. If you're able to test VoLTE, I'd be very interested. I believe it should have a VoLTE icon in your indicator bar at top when connected on a call if it's working properly. Insights on call quality, and whether SMS works normally with VoLTE enabled also welcome.
Too bad about reception. Not sure why it would be worse with same device on UT vs Volla OS.
Thanks for the info!
