Signal UT: Signal-Desktop for Ubuntu Touch
-
Also I add some information in regard of the remarks that were made on the latets Ubports Q&A show:
Signal-Destkop can only be used as a secondary client, but you can have your primary client inside Waydroid (with official Signal app or Molly Foss ) on the same phone. Then to link the account do the following with the help of another camera-enabled device ( computer, other smartphone, reflex camera,...) : Open at the same time Signal UT and Signal/Molly on Waydroid on the main device, then take a picture of the Qr-Code of Signal UT with the other device, then switch immediately to Signal or Molly on Waydroid where you have your main account, and scan the picture of the Qr-code on the screen of the other device. Try to do it quite fast as the Qr-Code validity expires after a time that can be quite short, but you still have largely enough time. You only need to do this once.
-
@pparent I've plugged my phone on a monitor and leverage the Ubuntu Touch desktop mode (convergence) to have Signal UT and Waydroid side by side. Then you can take picture directly with your phone.
The only thing a bit hard with this setup were that Waydroid scale with a big zoom. I had to update the LineageOS display setting to reduce UI to the smallest possible value.

@pparent have you experimented with integrating native notifications similar to WhatsWeb?

I will, but I can't do everything at once.
This will require to cross-compile a patched version of libnotify to send notification to Lomiri postal service instead of standard freedesktop.org notifications. This is pretty much of a hack, but it should work since signal-desktop uses libnotify.
Please be patient, the client will improve progressively.

The app is progressing at a very nice pace, as a user I cannot possibly complain. Your effort is appreciated!

Not saying it's bad. In fact, the work is great. Also the functional keyboard is amazing. Just wondering if there was a roadmap.

-
There is no roadmap for two reasons:
-First because what I'm doing here is experimental and it's impossible to predict for sure how hard will be something, or event if it will be possible at all, before it's done.
-Second because I'm not payed for this, so I do it depending on my time and desire and motivation and without pressure.
All that I do here is opensource and reproductible. As I said before anyone is more than welcome to jump into the development of this project to make it go faster or in a more predictable way, or implement a specific feature they want.
-
@pparent How you solved the keyboard issue ?
any magic ? -
Some hacks found after a lot of debuging, investigation, trial and error, and perseverance!
I've realized that simulating a keypress from an external keyboard in the window will unlock the enter and back button
-
I've release a the new version 7.80.1-1 with the following improvements:
-Allow microphone
-Allow downloading files with contenthub
-Bump to signal-desktop 7.80.1: includes support for pollsPlease read the new "tips and tricks" section, and if you see a significant bug not mentioned in this section, and not previously reported, please report here or in github! Thank you!
You can also report if everything is working fine (new features)!

-
Now the microphone is enabled, if some people can test calls, it would be nice to know the level of usability, the presence or not of echo, and the audio quality!

-
@pparent I am very happy to have the voicemail option now, because I prefer them instead of typing.
The recording in terms of presence, echo, and the audio quality is very good.
-
@pparent Maybe in the near future the Signal Icon (it is an X in this case) will be function on a xaomi pocco x3 nfc.
-
@pparent the emoticons are usable square but not up ride
-
@pparent Volla Quintus, 24.04.1.1 stable. I made a call and sound was very good on both sides. Thanks btw for your amazing work

I the future yes, in yes near future no. It will not happen before the system upgrades to Mir.2.x and we can switch to Wayland which might not be, before another 6 month (or more). It depends on the Ubuntu Touch roadmap. Until then, there is nothing that I can do on my side. In the mean time you can pin the icon while exporting to content-hub.

I'm not sure to understand, can you explain more?
-
@pparent I canΒ΄t send pictures at the moment, but I try to describe it.
There is a possibilities to set an emoticon: direct on the left beside the text "(-:" This doesn't work on my phone.
But now I found out, that there is another possibility on the downside between "where you can change to numbers". The button shows like a "earth".
So for me is ok now, but first I did not know the second way to set a smiley. -

Hum ok well that's strange, on my phone I can add a smiley both from Signal Panel, and from the keyboard (via the icon like a earth).
But it's true that even on my side the smiley panel is a bit buggy keyboard opens and closes many times, sometimes I need to click twice on the button, but other than that it is usable! (It seems it works more reliably if you first click click elsewhere to close the keyboard, and make the text-edit area be at the bottom of the screen) There might be a bug though I will see later.

By the way next release will focus on Importing/Uploading files.
