Yes, the spreading UT is GOOD, if that enlarges user base enough to help all around.

....one thing you must realize is UT is NOT like standard linux! ...I realize UT is NOT really like Debian, Ubuntu, LM, in the ways you mention (I did use the word 'closer'...), and you left out 'read only'.

I got an orange pi 5 too and even though I'll not be running ubuntu touch on it I can give two other answers for the why:
- Other than Mediatek Genio, rk3588 is one of the most powerful and recent (relatively speaking) boards supported by mainline linux, so this can be a real mainline linux port for ubuntu touch.
- https://liberux.net/ is trying to build the liberux nexx phone based on an rk3588s board. It's not going to be exactly the same as orange pi 5 but it will only be a small step from there.

@haagch
That liberux phone looks interesting ! Sadly, far out of my phone budget - even the redesigned, lower cost unit (current, compared to last year). -
the opi 5 build uses the same script for my x86_64 version
currently i still have not tested the opi5 version just the x86_64 version so idk
