Call for testing: Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-5
-
We've just released the RC image for the Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-5, which should have version 2024-W30 or newer. Please take some time to switch your spare/development phone to the 20.04 RC channel and test this OTA.
Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-5 is a maintenance release with only a minimal number of changes. That said, we still have a number of changes in this OTA. Please have a look if:
- The battery life, compared to the previous OTA, doesn't not get worse.
- There's no settings being overwritten (you don't have to be exhaustive. Just report if you remembered a setting being different before receiving this update).
- Morph Browser works as well as it was in the previous OTA (please don't report known website incompatibilities).
Please note that only critical and security fixes will be able to enter Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-5 as this point. Normal bug fixes and new features will need to wait for our next release. Please do not discuss normal bug fixes and new features here.
Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-5 is expected to be released on 29 July 2024. We appreciate all testing we will receive.

i am waiting for one hour for switching channel from devel to Rc ,it does not switch channel to rc till now.Any help available? Only "fetching channels " Circles.
-
Installed on a OP 5T and OP 6T. My interest is battery life.
I will leave and see how it goes.

Does Waydroid work for people? It has been broken on devel since March, so seems like the issues has propagated here now as well. The app appears to be running (Waydroid logo is visible in the taskbar), however no Android window appears on the screen.
Happens to me on Joyeuse, not sure if for others or elsewhere too. However, switching back to stable fortunately (I really need it for banking apps for instance) does recover this for me still.
-
@zubozrout That is better asked in the Waydroid section of the Forum or here https://t.me/waydroidonut as it is not strictly a UT issue and not an OTA issue. It also might be device specific.
JFI Waydroid is working for me on devel on a FP4 and my banking app has just updated and works though the other one will not and asks me to restore to my phone to the correct defaults. -
I am able to download OTA-5 RC at about 10.07 IST.2024-W30.Now working alright.
-
Everything works fine on the FP4 after switching to the RC channel. Only the 'Waydroid Stop' app icon has disappeared and cannot be restored even after uninstalling and reinstalling it. The app itself works and the icon labeling is also there.

I also have the waydroid stop icon/picture missing. It's weird that it only effects that app.

Thank you for raising this up. We've found the root cause of the issue and is working on a fix. The fix will appear in the next RC.

This is due to an internal change which require Waydroid Helper to follow. I'll file a bug against Waydroid Helper to request this change.

@peat_psuwit Thank you so much. You just made my day brighter, as it scared me a lot. As much as I don't want to use Android there are occasions in which I can't choose and using Waydroid inside Ubuntu Touch for that is simply perfect.
-
@peat_psuwit to let you kwow, I've just updated UBT to last devel (r275) and Waydroid to last image too but i'm not experiencing any issue on Joyeuse

Hello!
Missing option in SystemSettings\Gestures: double tap to wake the device up.
(Last rc update in Focal - Pixel 3a)
Thx -
@karibooooo OnePlus5T, option to tap to wake is there, but it doesn't work.
@peat_psuwit Battery drain is normal. OP6T battery dead today (~72% to dead, in two days, but my workroom is really warm which will affect battery drain). Will keep testing.

Hello,
I let myself go to the rc.
It says : « only critical and security fixes will be able to enter Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-5 ; Normal bug fixes and new features will need to wait for our next release »
A few months have passed since ota-4, but ..
Ok, since it's like that, … fixed bugs and new features will come in the next one.
So I hope that from ota-6 I will be able to hear the sound after a video recording with the camera.
I say this because I think it's normal for it to work perfectly on a smartphone, as this feature has been used on cell phones for 20 years. As a UT user since 2015, I would like this basic function to work normally again. I won't wait any longer for ota-7. I disobeyed but Thank you for your understanding. -

(Last rc update in Focal - Pixel 3a)This is not an OTA-4 regression. The feature was removed by the device porter, because having it enabled caused some Pixel 3a / XL devices to have a non-functioning touch screen.
-
@vince-vs New features go into the future release that will be based on Ubuntu 24.04. On a case by case basis it will be evaluated if these features should be back-ported to 20.04.
-
@arubislander thanks for the explanation.
(No bug, for me, with this minor but useful functionality. On Focal stable.) -
@karibooooo Sure, but once rc gets promoted to stable, the feature will be gone there as well.

Would this be related to this bug?

If so, just reboot the device after making a phone call.
Not sure this will be fixed in next OTA.
Otherwise there's a script to fix this permanently.

Do you happen to remember if it has ever worked before? That said, the tap-to-wake system is pretty much device-specific. We have to rely on porters to look into it.

A few months have passed since ota-4, but ..
Ok, since it's like that, … fixed bugs and new features will come in the next one.First, we're sorry for the slow rate of bug fixes in the past few months. We're in the middle of bring our Ubuntu Touch stack to be based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, which turns out to take more time than anticipated.
That said, the sentence doesn't mean that non-critical fixes cannot be included in 20.04 OTA's. Rather, it simply means that we're in the freeze period at the moment. There will be at least 1 more 20.04 OTA in the future (to support the change of release system), so it's still possible to get bug fixes in there.
